Bar Pod
Bars are one of the few businesses that don’t let you lie to yourself for very long. The numbers are real. The feedback is immediate. The mistakes are expensive. Bar Pod is a podcast about what it actually takes to build and run bars—and by extension, any small, creative, high-risk business—without the hype, the shortcuts, or the guru nonsense.
Hosted by brothers Ryan and Chad, Bar Pod is a candid, conversational series about ownership, operations, and the long game of building something that lasts. Ryan handles the day-to-day reality of running multiple bar and hospitality concepts, while Chad brings the perspective of someone balancing bartending, ownership, and family life. Together, they talk through real decisions, real mistakes, and real lessons learned the hard way.
This isn’t a how-to manual and it’s not a highlight reel. It’s an honest look at what works, what doesn’t, and why most good ideas live or die on execution. Episodes explore everything from finances and branding to staffing, burnout, risk tolerance, and knowing when to push—or when to walk away.
Bars are just the lens. The lessons apply to anyone who’s started a business, thought about starting one, bought a building, managed people, taken on risk, or tried to design a life with more freedom and fewer illusions.
Bar Pod is thoughtful, practical, occasionally irreverent, and grounded in experience. If you care about building things in the real world—and doing it without pretending it’s easy—pull up a stool.

The Dive Bar Episode
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A real dive bar doesn’t need a marketing plan, it needs time, stories, and a little bit of grime in the corners. We’re going all-in on the dive bar edition, starting with the debate: can you actually “open” a dive bar, or does a place have to earn it through years of wear, cheap beer, dim lighting, and regulars who treat the room like a second living room? Along the way we hit the small moments that only make sense in bar culture, like getting carded for bitters, the World Cup crowd that drank Boston dry, and the Guardians game day Hamms hack that feels like a cheat code.
Then we get specific. We name the bars that set the standard and the details that prove it, from the Green Parrot in Key West with its open-air energy, live music, locals, and that unmistakable neon glow, to Johnny’s Little Bar with the darkness, the greasy burgers, the old coolers, the side entrance, and the famously weird upstairs bathroom situation. We also bounce through Key West staples like Schooner Wharf, Captain Tony’s, and the Chart Room, plus New Orleans favorites like The Abbey and Lafitte’s, where candlelight and history do more work than décor ever could.
We don’t dodge the serious side either. Dive bars are disappearing in places like New York City as rents rise and buildings get scooped up, and we talk about what gets lost when the last “low life” rooms turn into something shinier and more expensive. If you love dive bars, bar history, local drinking culture, and the strange comfort of a no-frills shot-and-a-beer special, you’ll feel seen here. Subscribe, share this with your favorite bar buddy, leave a review, and tell us which dive bar deserves a spot on the list.
Studio Setup And Beer Picks
SPEAKER_01Mike. He's getting really professional back there. Yeah. I feel like I'm making nervous. I know. I feel like I'm in like a studio or something. I got um You gotta watch out for those face pubes. Faces. We're ready to go, huh? Okay. Oh, we even got the lighting.
SPEAKER_00Look at this. We're good.
SPEAKER_01I think we're all right today. Okay. We're gonna do barpod. Oh, by the way, Dad, you were off on the episode. We're one episode ahead of where you uh on the last label for me. This should be episode seven.
SPEAKER_00Episode seven? Season two.
SPEAKER_01Season two, episode seven.
SPEAKER_00Did you catch yo, you know you didn't catch House of Dragon. You don't you don't mind?
SPEAKER_01No, I I I need I'm gonna wait till fall. Okay, do it all. Banger. Did it?
SPEAKER_03I've heard Ryan and Jubas in the body.
SPEAKER_01Hey, here we are. I got a little confused a couple times.
SPEAKER_00I think we yeah, we labeled it wrong once, but it's fine.
SPEAKER_01This is uh kind of a special episode. It is. We discussed this while we were over at Kelly's Island. Um, and it's uh the beer represented. We are gonna do a dive bar episode only. So this is bar pod the dive bar edition.
SPEAKER_00Cracked them.
SPEAKER_01Cracked
World Cup Fans Drink Boston Dry
SPEAKER_01them. All right, before we get into the dive bar, Chad, you got any uh news you want to? I guess uh something just happened to me.
SPEAKER_00Um I got I got a little something small that I saw on the news that I kind of loved. Uh it was because of the World Cup in in uh did you get a little bit?
SPEAKER_01I'll tell you what, Hams is a fine beer.
SPEAKER_00Real quick, real quick. I'm drinking Black Label here. I believe uh from the land of Sky Blue.
SPEAKER_01Yes, we'll get to that shortly. Okay. Okay. Oh, that's tasty Canadian beer. See, you can tell he's not on the coffee yet. Uh-uh. Like last week. Black label. Black label.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, uh you probably saw it. I think it was everywhere. The this it's the first time in a while, I guess, that the Scottish World Cup team has been playing. They drank Boston right out of beer.
SPEAKER_01Well, I guess they started by emptying the plane of beverages on the way. They did.
SPEAKER_00They did. More and more comes out about the story. It's it's hysterical, dude. But they drank the first part of it, the small part, was the fact that they were hanging out at the original Sam Adams Brewery, and they basically drank them out of the original the Boston locker. That's fantastic.
SPEAKER_01And most of the bars. And most of the I did see a clip. Uh I did see a clip that said the bar 10, the bar owner was or the manager was doing an interview. Yeah. And he goes, Yeah, they drank us right out of everything except for Bud Light. Did he really say that? That's rough. Those guys will drink anything, they won't even touch the Bud Light.
SPEAKER_00We've always talked about this. Do you remember a while back there were a couple German guys that were hanging in town, and every time they would have to be like the Sam Adams? Sam Adams, Boston Lager, which goes to maybe that shows you because the Germans know their beer.
SPEAKER_01It's a good beer.
SPEAKER_00They have a law for crying out loud.
SPEAKER_01It's a good beer. All
Getting Carded For Bitters
SPEAKER_01right. My story is easy. Uh, I just did um you do you probably do Walmart deliveries and DoorDash and all that. So I got a Walmart delivery, and I got bitters.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, who pissed you off.
SPEAKER_01Hey now.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I thought you said he got bitter.
SPEAKER_01No. Does he say Angostora? Is that how you say it?
SPEAKER_00I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_01Uh anyway, bitters, and uh they carted me for it. For the bitters? For bitters, which is I don't know the alcohol level, and it's so low. That's like getting carded for mouthwash. So I would say this if a kid is using the Walmart delivery app to get drunk off bitters, more power to you. Good luck. You got it.
SPEAKER_00Just getting angry. I don't think that's possible, but if that's what you can do, have a nice time. I like it though.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02Dive bar episode. I'm stoking sidebar on your bud white sidebar? Yeah, sidebar. Dive bar. Beer makes you smarter.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00It made Bud Wise. Bud wise, thank you. Yeah, very good. Well, that's true.
SPEAKER_01That's a good classic old school. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Very good. Shane Burroughs always called uh Bud Light when we over at the Islands, he called it Butt Wipe.
SPEAKER_01The domestics, and it's funny, like this beer doesn't get shit.
SPEAKER_00Hams? That's out of what's funny is out of all of our dive bar beers' garage beers, that's my we got a pretty good selection here at Battle Bar of the Dad, garage dive bar beers. Quick little, and I haven't I haven't been there yet because I I like Minneton. You see, Dad, you see telling me that we need those ones that come off the side. We do. Because I I feel like a I feel like an ogre doing this all the time. All right.
SPEAKER_01Well are we gonna approve the uh the uh PO to uh get the PO? What are they called? What are they called? The mic?
SPEAKER_00A boom mic? Boom mic. Boom mic. Maybe we need boom mics because he's got I keep looking at back there and he keeps telling me to do this, and I feel weird doing that. Yeah, I know you got hunched over.
SPEAKER_01And I'm all hunched over all the time in this show.
SPEAKER_00I have hard enough time with my posture.
SPEAKER_01You're already having back problems at this age.
SPEAKER_00Uh little little tiny before we go, little tiny hamst
The Hamms Baseball Beer Hack
SPEAKER_00thing. Um, and I think you know this. Um, I didn't get to go yet this year, so hopefully it carried on from last year. But at uh Progressive Field, Jacob's field. Oh, you're talking about the ninja one? There's a there's a beer cheat. A beer hack. Beer hack. So I think Bud Lights and Miller lights and all those big cans are like 15, 14 bucks. Yeah. If you go to left field out there, there's a dude sitting on a stool in front of like three glass case refrigerator.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's one of the ones that you auto-check out, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. You auto-check out they have 24 ounces.
SPEAKER_01Tall boy, $7 hams.
SPEAKER_00And at a baseball game, that changes everything. That's your cheat code for the Guardians. That's Guardians baseball beer hack. And hopefully it's still there because I haven't been yet this year the day.
SPEAKER_01I was there this year for opening day, and I but I didn't make it that far. You weren't over there, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But that's that's the beer hack. Anyway, all right, onwards.
SPEAKER_01Okay, onwards. We're
What Actually Makes A Dive Bar
SPEAKER_01talking about dive bars today.
SPEAKER_00Let's just get this is the official dive bar.
SPEAKER_01This is the dive bar episode. Let's get started uh with what makes a dive bar a dive.
SPEAKER_00That list is long.
SPEAKER_01What is it? Is it the price point? Is it how dirty it is? That list is long right now. Do the drinks have to be good? That's what movie. What movie? Oh, I can't get it. What movie is that? It's Ocean's 11. Ocean's 11. That's Brad Pitt.
SPEAKER_00No, that was Matt Damon. Matt Damon.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Very good. Very good.
SPEAKER_00So What makes a dive bar?
SPEAKER_01Give me your give me your first thing. Can yeah, uh this is tough because can you just open a dive bar? I don't think. Or does it need the history?
SPEAKER_00I don't I don't think, although we'll maybe it'll change throughout the episode, but I don't think you can just open a dive bar.
SPEAKER_01I I disagree with that to an extent. You think you can. But I don't think you can yeah, it's it's tough. You maybe not. Maybe not. We'll get to it. Let me we're gonna arrive at some conclusions, I think, during this episode. Yeah. I'm gonna go with it's a feeling more than anything else.
SPEAKER_00Okay, okay. Then well, then in that case, by that by that first criteria, then yes, you could open a dive bar.
SPEAKER_01But I also don't think you can have expensive drinks at a dive bar. Uh uh, you know, yeah, you can have a couple, but like you need to have some price pointy beer. It needs to it needs to be like you need to be able to get a ham's uh for three bucks. Right. There's it's it doesn't have to be you know 50 cent beer night. I wish that still existed, but that's not possible.
SPEAKER_00There really is so much stuff though, like lighting, right? Lighting plays an important part. Um the the the and this is what's tough when we say open a dive bar. The years of of now you're getting into the grime. The wear and the grip. The grime, the grime. There's gotta be some dirt in the corner. There's gotta be some spider webs. There's gotta be some spider website. It's a it's it's a it's a time pass thing. Um, you know, the the the wear from the bar where people's elbows are.
SPEAKER_01Elbows are then, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Or forearms. Ah man, but there's there's there's a lot.
SPEAKER_01Okay, let's get into as we let's take the path down some of our favorite dive bars, I think. And then that then we can go back to like the sensory, like the feelings that might might be how we get there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like this.
SPEAKER_01This is gonna be a tough one. All right. Oh boy.
Favorite Dive Bar Green Parrot
SPEAKER_01Your number one hall tie dive bar. What is it? Oh my god. That's tough. It's very tough.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna have to uh you're gonna have to get in on this one. Okay. I got mine. Just like that?
SPEAKER_01Just like that. Well, if you're the one that gives me the best feeling that I when I'm walking up to it, something comes something comes over me. I've everything, the world is is everything's good. Can I guess? Yeah. Green parrot. You nailed it. Yeah. Green parrot, Key West Florida. That is my favorite dive bar. It has what aspects? Okay, it has a lot of aspects for me. Open air. Love that, right? Big thing there. Great live music. Yep. It is certainly divy. Yep. A lot of locals hang out. That's a big thing. I think locals are a big key to it. I've always remembered I wrote a paper in college about the communication of bars. Yeah. How that's where you can, you know, discover everything. I mean, you're gonna last time I went to Green Parrot. Oh, I was actually at a different bar and discovered Ken's and I were down there, and we were where were we at? Another locals bar. I don't remember which one. They're like, oh, this kid from Australia is playing at Green Parrot. This kid's like 16. He was before Amber and I went down. That was right for, and this kid was amazing. And I wouldn't, it was not announced, I would never have known it if it wasn't for the local thing. So uh and also, of course, Parrot has popcorn out unless necessary, but that is an advantage. Um and uh yeah, that's my that's my pool table. It has a pool table. I don't think that's necessary. No, I don't think you need a pool table, it helps. Um you got splashback?
SPEAKER_00Splash.
SPEAKER_01That's at least it's it's better with coffee than when you're peeing.
SPEAKER_00And you know, another thing we didn't talk about, another thing we didn't talk about, and this tends to be the case for some.
SPEAKER_01Which happens in dive.
unknownGod damn it.
SPEAKER_00The bartenders at dive bars are always a certain kind.
SPEAKER_01A certain kind.
SPEAKER_00Like they have a little bit, they're they're a little grit. A little grit. They're phenomenal, they'll crack a joke, they'll they'll be a little uh they'll be a uh I don't want to say terse. What's a good name for it? But like uh terse? Awfully bigger. You like that? You like that? Yeah, they're they've got they've got a big thing.
SPEAKER_01What a great lexicon you have, Chad.
SPEAKER_00Oh God.
SPEAKER_01Um, I would say that, yeah, and you know what makes you feel good about going to that bar? When you have that bartender who's maybe a little gritty, yeah, a little terse, but then you then you crack the code. Now we get lucky because you can crack the code pretty easy. You don't ever want to come out and say that you're a bartender. That's a douchey move. You never want to do that. But once you say order a shot of Fournette for you and the bartender, they'll probably tell. Then they know you are in the industry and you're in. They do. They do. If you say what? Order a shot of Fournette. What's Fournette? It's a it's a liquid. Sorry? You don't know what Fresnette is? No. Oh, well, we'll do one uh right after the show. Hey, uh, you'll do one. Well, it will help your breakfast. Uh really. It's also a uh apertif or digestive. Digestif. Digestif, not apertif. But it could be an aperfitef. Anyway, so that's that's mine.
SPEAKER_00You know what else? You know what else Green Parrot? You know what else Green Parrot has that you didn't mention? Just looking in at night, it's got this wonderful green glow. Oh boy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the reflections in neon.
unknownOh man.
SPEAKER_01It lights up the corner. That was the paper. Reflections in neon. Reflections in neon. I wrote about another dive bar that we can talk about. If I'm being honest, that is a that's gonna be a really hard one to beat. Yeah, I think so too.
SPEAKER_02I'm with you. That's my number one. So that's your number. We're gonna go with green parrot as well. Green parrot.
SPEAKER_01Two votes for green parrot.
SPEAKER_00Wow. Okay,
Johnny’s Little Bar Essentials
SPEAKER_00just for the sake of Are you gonna dissent? Yeah. I'm not gonna make it unanimous because that is in my top three.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and we've talked about it before. I mean, we've talked about dive bars plenty of times on this.
SPEAKER_00But I'll tell you what, and this is uh I I I anybody that has been listening to this podcast will probably guess mine. And it's local, regional. Joe's? Nope. No, hooples.
SPEAKER_01Nope. Hooples. No, Johnny's little bar. Yeah, of course. Why did we not even go there? Why did we take that right? Okay, yes. That's my favorite. And we talked about that, you know, a lot in the last episode and the first episode.
SPEAKER_00And the first episode. I there's there's just that three points.
SPEAKER_01So obviously give it three points of why it's your dive bar.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Uh we we've we've talked about a few of them already, right? Um, age. Age and and just wear and tear, man. You roll in there and you can tell there has been some seats in that bar. There's been there's been some people, some butts in those, in those bar seats. People have there's the bar has a little bit of a lean to it, if you ever notice when you go in there. From ages, it's kind of like sank in the back a little bit, so it's leaning one way. Sure, yeah. You've got um You usually want a couple health code violations in the iPhone. Yeah, of course. Of course, of course, of course. It's got everything. It's got it's got uh the we talked about lighting. It is dark in there. It doesn't matter if it's noon or 9 p.m. or midnight, right? It looks the exact same. Right. You walk outside and it's almost like you're coming out of a strip club, you know what I mean? Oh, yeah. Uh in varsity blues. What else? It's got it's got what we talked about, it's got everything. It's got uh there's some Oh, there's good good burgers, greasy burgers. Greasy burgers huge greasy burgers. The beer selection's always great.
SPEAKER_01Side door entrance, that's always in an alley.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. In an alley. It's got the old school large glass beer coolers.
SPEAKER_01We better get some free drinks next time we go to Johnny's because we give them a lot of love on this episode. Yeah, they do. More than our own bar. More than our own bar. You know what bar has a side door here locally? Paddle bar.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, paddle bar. But it's not a dive bar. No, it's think of one that has a side door.
SPEAKER_01Uh Ray's. Oh, Ray's door. They have a front door as well. They've got both, but yeah, Ray's does have a sideboard. And that's, you know, it's funny.
SPEAKER_02You walk in by you walk in by the door.
SPEAKER_01You walk through the kitchen. That's a dive bar attribute. Good point. And here's the raise, of course, was Terry's before it was Rays. And it's funny, even though I what I've as I've been working on TEKS, yeah, which side note, we are on the last Hura for TEECS. All we're doing is waiting for the liquor license transfer, and TICS will be open. So it could be call your uh local uh congressman and get them to push the uh liquor department to be faster. Other than that, uh we're rocking. But so when I walk down to Rays and have lunch from Teaks, by the way, the pizza at Ray's is fantastic. I've had it. They just they just got a new pizza oven.
SPEAKER_00Oh, oh, newer than the last one.
SPEAKER_01Oh, this is recent. Like they're like I talked to uh Tim, who's one of the owners, yeah, and like they really went with their uh like he told me about the sauce and the cheese and their source and things. It's really good.
SPEAKER_00Sauce.
SPEAKER_01I recommend it. Anyway, back even though I walk from Teaks, which is the other side of the building, instead of going through the front door, I typically go on the side door just so when I walk in, people know that I know. Yes. That's another thing about dive bars. That's right. You gotta know, you gotta know, you know what I mean. You want to look like a like you've been there.
SPEAKER_00That's a good point. It's a good point. You want to look like a local, and you know here's another thing we keep the way around a bar anyway. Yeah. Now I'm I'm I'm I'm just thinking about Johnny's more, which I automatically I want to be there right now. But you when you go, I love I love the bang.
SPEAKER_01I think we're getting a little too much. I mean, I love Johnny's, but settle down.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no. I this this this Chad would bang Johnny's if we could relax. Relax.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Maybe.
SPEAKER_00Um, there's a little humor in there. When you go upstairs to the bathroom. Oh, yeah, upstairs to the bathroom. Bro, when you go upstairs to the bathroom, it's carpeted. It's carpeted. Carpeted stuff. The entire for some for some reason, you you go upstairs to the bathroom and there's just a what would be uh like an upstairs dining area. Yeah. I sat up there last time I was there.
SPEAKER_01Did you?
SPEAKER_00Because it was full because it was opening day. It was opening day. It's just hilarious. It's rarely ever used, only when they're crushed. When they're crushed, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um he still ran food up for us.
SPEAKER_00I know, I know. It's it's carpeted with all these random tables and chairs. Oh, dude. I bathrooms are always weird in dive bars. It's yeah, it's yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know who who's a big Johnny's fan is uh as a matter of fact, I just got a text, you know, Patrick Shepard that works with. He uh they're down in Mexico right now, and he just sent me a photo. They're on the beach with with a with paddle bar gear. Oh, I love that. That's yeah, you go in with basically you go to Johnny's with Chad or Patrick, and you're good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you're talking about Terry's how Ray's and before that Terry's. What was it called before Terry's? Oh uh I don't even remember his mom knows that because she grew up in Baby.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Steve's Steve's.
SPEAKER_00Oh, so there's a couple first. All first names. So Steve's Terry's and Ray's no that might be we might be onto something.
SPEAKER_01Does a dive bar require the first name of a guy? Or a girl?
SPEAKER_00All right. Luis's? Are we are we to the point where Luis's? Yeah, are we at a point where we can start bringing up other dive bars that we love?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think we're we've gone through the kind of where everything's at. Let's go to the favorite ones.
Lightning Round Of Beloved Dives
SPEAKER_01You can go regional. Let's do here's how we're gonna do this. We're gonna do kind of a bit of a lightning round. We'll go, uh name your bar, name one attribute, why it's a dive bar. Just one, though. Just one.
SPEAKER_00Also, side note, if you're watching or l watching or listening to this episode, by all means, please. I want to hear, we want to hear your favorite dive bars. Yeah, yeah. Uh comments, however, you can get used to the books.
SPEAKER_01What we'd like to do, what we'll do is if if we get some good comments and some good feedback on favorite dive bars, we'll we'll bring that into either the next episode or maybe we'll do a quick little 10-minute episode that's just just a little bit of the extension of the dive bar because I think that's needed.
SPEAKER_00Can I can I say something real quick? Yeah, if you want.
SPEAKER_01You uh if you get closer to your mic, you can.
SPEAKER_00Oh son of a bitch. Yeah, you guys, you guys both um you know named Green Parrot as your favorite. I know what you're gonna name. Um, but you guys, I feel a little I feel a little bad because you you did we did not talk about one of one of also all key favorites in Key West that's right up there, and it's certainly a dive bar.
SPEAKER_01Schooner?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Schooner Wharf. Okay, so why a dive bar.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Name one thing. Why?
SPEAKER_00Okay, you can clearly start with the vibe.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00It is you walk in there and it is the bartenders have been there forever. It's dirty, it's open air, nothing has changed in the last 50 years. I'm gonna name uh another one in Key West. Oh boy.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that uh is a great dive bar. Actually, I've got two, but I'm gonna name one. Captain Tony's. Oh, okay. And uh I'm gonna say the reason is because you go into the bathroom, which is quite disgusting, I might add. There is a frame on the wall that Jimmy Buffett wrote out the uh first line to Last Mango in Paris while I was talking to um Captain Tony. And there's another thing about dive bars that's very important stories, whether true or not.
SPEAKER_00History. Now, now isn't correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't couldn't you since I'd I'd I'd say that Key West is a stronghold of dive bars.
SPEAKER_01Oh, there's some great, but it's New Orleans, probably another one.
SPEAKER_00New Orleans is another one, which we'll talk about.
SPEAKER_01We'll have to talk about that.
SPEAKER_00We'll talk about. Um, but isn't uh Tony's the original Sloppy Joe's which way's the original Sloppy Joe's should be considered one of the original dive bars in Key West. Uh potentially, yeah. Yeah, I mean I don't know if it's the oldest bar in Key West.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no. Green Parrot is the oldest bar in Key West. Do not screw with that. Oh, I didn't know that. Oh, I didn't know that. Oldest bar in Key West, Green Parrot. Oh.
SPEAKER_02What was that? Quote by Tony. It's on his t-shirt. Or maybe it's one of the oldest. What is Captain Tony's t-shirt?
SPEAKER_00Quote All it takes in life is a something and a tremendous sex drive.
SPEAKER_01All you need in life is a large ego and a tremendous sex drive. Brains don't mean shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it. That's that's Captain Tony. Didn't Berge used to hang out with I'm sure he did. Yeah. I'm positive of that. Okay. Probably Harry, too.
SPEAKER_00Probably Harry. So you let's let's sachet over to New Orleans. Ohins. Oh that has one of my top The Abbey. Oh my god. That bar is okay. Does all the things that are dirty. Can we talk about the first thing is the entrance? You walk through a some plastic. Some butcher, some butcher style plastic.
SPEAKER_01So you're already most people get to that point and go, I'm not going in there. I'm not going in. We do not have that problem. No, no. There's a skeleton on the wall with a t-shirt that's been up there for so long. It has disintegrated. It's disintegrated off the t-shirt. That's important. They they it's dark. Dye bars. They all have to be. I mean, you know, they're not. I don't think they have to be dark all the time, but they do have to have a certain shadiness to them. Je ne sais quoi. Oh, there's that. It's French. It's French. It's French and French are doing pretty well on the FIFA. I see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Zidane. Zidane. No, um. He's an old player from the. Anyway. Very good. The Abbey. Abbey. Remember there, and their special is always a shot in a beer. That is. If your special all the time is a Budweiser. A boiler maker. A boiler maker. A boilermaker. What do you are?
SPEAKER_01And do you have to, if you go to a proper dive bar, I think it's important to order that. What? Shot in a beer. Shot in a beer. Old school. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That is very old school. That's and it's got to be whiskey too. I don't think baby tequila. Sounds a little too serious drinking problem. But yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let's not let's not judge Napoleon. No. Times are tough out there. Dive bars must
Why Dive Bars Are Disappearing
SPEAKER_01exist. So the reason we're on to this is because uh New York Times did a story about how dive bars are going away in New York City. As a matter of fact, I just ordered a book that comes today. I'm very excited to jump into it. And I will tell you what it is. I forgot the title, but I could find it real quick.
SPEAKER_00While you look for it, the whole thing was um a number of factors, obviously, but the number one thing they cited was uh kind of It's called Low Life.
SPEAKER_01Low Life? It's all about the dive bars and the bar history of New York. I get it today. Um that's my night tonight.
SPEAKER_00How sad is it that their number one thing was like uh a lot of these buildings that have been purchased by uh you know big conglomerates. Big conglomerates are saying, listen, your rent's going from, you know, right, and the dive bars can't exist. And they can't exist because they can't pay it, and they've been there for 70, 80 years.
SPEAKER_01And it's by the way, any big conglomerates listening, paddle bar is available, but I'm just kidding. Just kidding.
SPEAKER_02So, so curious, you're doing dive bars. What is in Erie County? Uh you're gonna do that? I know.
SPEAKER_01You can't even think of. Oh. Oh, really? Yes. Oh, he's very excited about it. Okay, if we're gonna go Erie County,
Erie County Classics And Old Dutch
SPEAKER_01let's go. I'm gonna go ahead and then bring up something. Uh dive bar that was your kind of first dive. Important to, you know, turning 21. Maybe for some of us a little younger than 21. Yeah. Ryan's gonna say old Dutch. Yeah, mine's gonna be the old Dutch. I spent a lot of great the great times there. Uh, you know, me and my buddy Aaron spent a lot of time. Yeah, and I'll pick you up at three o'clock. Thank you for that. You're welcome.
SPEAKER_00Let me tell you a quick, just tiny little 30-second story about Ryan and Old Dutch. I had just turned 16 so I could drive. Uh huh. And um I got a call from him at about 3 30. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, the bar, yeah, that's around when the bar closed at 2 30.
SPEAKER_00Can you come snag Aaron and I? We've had a little bit too much to drink at the old.
SPEAKER_01Hey, we were responsible even at that age.
SPEAKER_00You were. And uh, so I drove my little GTI over there to go pick him up and a Upon pulling into the parking lot of said establishment, I look up. Oh, we were on the roof. And they were on the roof drinking Captain Morgan. What?
SPEAKER_01Yes, sir. I never heard that story.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I look, I pull in, I got the windows down. I hear, I hear, hey! I look up and they're sitting on the roof.
SPEAKER_02Oops. What happens? I never heard that.
SPEAKER_01Remember when it was the full name, of course, was Gerald's Old Dutch? Yeah, the old French place. Yeah, that one buddy of ours used to call it Gerald's French place.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. My parents took me there when I was probably eight or nine.
SPEAKER_01You know, and here it is. Bar still exists.
SPEAKER_00That's a quintessential dive bar. A lot of dive bars have also have, I was just thinking of the old Dutch, and I have another thing in common. A uh popcorn machine. Yeah, that one had a popcorn machine.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if it's still there, but it used to. Yeah, they used to. Um, okay. What's another Erie County dive bar. I got one you're not gonna think of.
unknownOh boy.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I'm gonna go with Okay, not gonna think of. I mean, a good one, it's it's a good dive bar in town here. Okay. I got two good ones. In town? In town. I can think of it. Oh, I know, I know, I know one. I think Bud's Place is a great dive bar.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Probably one of the best looking bars if you walk in. Oh, inside. We were there the other day after playing some golf. Yeah. Well, you guys played golf, and I just hit the ball into the woods most of the time. Um, and then I would say four points kind of gets in that. And so does so see, we have a lot. Let's not forget um uh let's not forget Commons. That's a good dive bar. Commons. Commons. Common score. Oh, yeah. Some of the best wings in town. Yeah, their wings are phenomenal. And then would you call Sail in a dive bar? Yes. Yes, yeah. A lot of locals, boaters love it too. Yeah, and but probably a great breakfast on a Saturday morning.
SPEAKER_00I think we might be starting to throw around dive bar a little too.
SPEAKER_01I disagree.
SPEAKER_02I think I named those are all old schools. And you forgot, of course, one of the biggest dive bars. Uh it was uh the one out by your house.
SPEAKER_00Oh. Oh, oh Big John's party. Big John's party bar.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's got its own category.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't even know what that that's that's that's that doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_01That's a dove bar.
SPEAKER_00Dove. He just opens when he wants to, right? Yeah, John.
SPEAKER_01I see he's a good dude. He is a good dude.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting. All right, what do you got?
SPEAKER_01You got Erie that we forgot. Erie County Bar.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if they're still open, though.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you're talking about uh Tater Hill? That's right. Tater Hill. I think they are still open.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Wait, where's Tater Hill?
SPEAKER_01It's out on 113. No, 113. 61 is the one in Berlin Heights. That's uh I don't know what it's called now. Oh, leaves. Ohly's. That's a good bar.
SPEAKER_00Would you guys classify Wonder Bar in Milan as a dive bar? I think it probably I think it used to be.
SPEAKER_01Used to be. Um and I don't mean it's not a dive bar in a bad way because that's a good bar. They've got good food. It is. Um, I think it was I think they've got new owners that have cleaned it up. It still has the I think it still has the vibes, the vapors of a dive bar with uh without having to stick to the floor, which is okay too.
SPEAKER_00There's a um, I believe, and I I hope I'm not getting this wrong. Um, you know, when Amber lived in Columbus, I used to hang out in Columbus all the time. Yeah. Um there's one down in the short north called Mike's Place, I believe it is. Hopefully somebody corrects me if I'm wrong, but cash only. Um it's almost, it gives me, it's it's a it's a really good dive bar. Always an older, older, always an older lady in the bar.
SPEAKER_01We only have five minutes left. We've been talking about this. See, is this this isn't the funniest episode because we're talking about dive bars, but it's uh because we got kind of serious, we're all like we're very serious, we're clearly passionate about dive bars. Sorry. Mike's place. What about what about the one your buddies own in in uh oh Xeno's Xeno's at a dive bar?
SPEAKER_00Man, it's got you know what it's got the elements, it's got a lot of history, it's a phenomenal bar. Probably it's my favorite bar in Columbus. Um Mitch and the Mitch and the boys down there. If you're listening, which they're probably not, but Xeno's is such a good bar. I it's man. It's I don't know if it's a dive bar, though. It's close. Okay. It's on the it's on the cusp, but such a good bar. Their um let me go here. Uh the original Flytown Tavern.
SPEAKER_02That place has been around for a long time. Uh Ryan had nothing to complain about this week.
SPEAKER_01I'm impressed. We didn't get a no rants. Well, we're on the dive bar. I'm sure if you need me to pull a rant out, I'm I'm sure I got something. Oh, I'm sure you do. Um, but no, I'm we're we're we're dive bar this week.
SPEAKER_00Um wait a
The Scariest Bar We Ever Entered
SPEAKER_00minute.
SPEAKER_01What?
SPEAKER_00You have a note on here that we didn't bring up and I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_01Scariest dive bar you've walked into walked out.
SPEAKER_00Has that happened to you?
SPEAKER_01I've never I've never walked out of a bar before. Okay.
SPEAKER_00I you you and I walked into it.
SPEAKER_01I've fell out of a bar many times.
SPEAKER_00You and I, and I don't remember the name of this place. Do you remember Did you walk out of it? We no, no. We stayed, but it might have been uh recently anyway, in the last 10 years, the one I can remember feeling a little weird walking into. I don't remember the name of the place, but it was in the town where we went. We skied Schweitzer.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yes. I don't remember the name of that bar. Do you remember that one? That was it was we were in we were in um uh what's the town by Schweitzer Resort in Idaho? 15 minutes from Schweitzer. Bozeman, maybe? No, no, no, no. Tiny little ski town. Not a ski town, really.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There was a bar that you know, there's smoking when you walk in. I think it might have been some sort of cult. It was very weird. We had we actually I mean we stayed because you're not gonna walk in a bar now. We had one beer. It was Divey.
SPEAKER_00And it was it was the one where we walked in. I mean, there was no lady getting the record. What the fuck do you want? Yeah. Like, I mean, it was the I'm not I'm not lying. The music actually stopped.
SPEAKER_01It did.
SPEAKER_00And we weren't we weren't we have a sticker at Paddle Bar.
SPEAKER_01Someone gave us a sticker.
SPEAKER_00Someone gave us a sticker because we listen, we won the hearts. Oh, we won them of the people in there, but they looked at us like we were from a different country. Where? Oh, I well, you know what? We'll save it for next episode. We'll bring it back up.
SPEAKER_01Out of that bar probably flew to DC for the January 6th event.
SPEAKER_00I wasn't gonna say it. I'll say it. I wasn't gonna say it. There were a lot of Confederate flags behind the bar.
SPEAKER_01It was a wild place. It was a little scary in there.
SPEAKER_00And this was in Idaho of all time. What was the name of the town? Um I'm blanking. We'll figure it out. We'll we'll we'll we'll we'll come back to it next week because we we have to figure that out. That bar was wild.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was that was that's probably the the the the scariest one. Yeah. Um you know, we didn't uh do we have any more to name? I mean, there was one in Colorado I can't remember the name of it. This was a wild one.
SPEAKER_00This bar was in a trailer in um Oh, I got a great, I got another, I got a great one.
SPEAKER_01Silverplume,
When A Dive Bar Gets Gentrified
SPEAKER_01Colorado. Silver Plume didn't last very long, I think. They got shut down, but uh I don't even think they had a liquor license, but they were doing it anyway. Do you remember do you remember the brown in Breckenridge? Oh, yeah, that's a good one. Yep, the brown.
SPEAKER_00It was just an somebody just trying to put a bar in a house.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Which actually down in Austin, Texas, they did that with uh Rainy Street. But the I would not they I think they start out as dive bars. There's a thing that can happen. They start out as dive bars, and then they get then all of a sudden uh you know the hipsters show up. I know, and then they ruin it. It's not a dive bar anymore. Well, uh, let me give you a st I I don't even know, I feel bad about saying this, but you know it used to be one of my favorite.
SPEAKER_00Curly mustaches and what have you. If I say it. And it's still it's still a good bar. It's just not I don't I don't enjoy it as much as I used to. At Put in Bay, you'll probably think about you'll you'll I used to fishbowl? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01The best dive bar put in bay, and there's many good bars at Put in Bay, but the best dive bar is Joe's, hands down. Oh, without question. Yeah, without question.
SPEAKER_00But the fishbowl back in its heyday. Back when it had outboards on the wall, and there was no AC windows open in the front.
SPEAKER_01And that that was That's one that took the transform. It kind of changed, and it just still a good bar. I'm not gonna not go there, but it doesn't have that sticky dive bar feel that it doesn't have. It does not.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah. Wait, the with the Brown and Breckenridge, do you remember? Didn't they have like that was haunted? They had free tacos, didn't they? I think they did. Didn't they get free tacos all the time? It was just a whole bunch of ground beef sitting in a in a crock pot. Oh boy. Uh it wouldn't need it. Speaking of, we missed one in QS and you have been there. I have not. Every time I go, I somehow miss it. Um, because I I just don't think about it. Willie T's? No, though. Is it the map room? Chart room.
SPEAKER_01Oh, chart room. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00Chart room.
SPEAKER_01Chart room's a bar where if you run your fingernails under the bar, you're probably gonna get some cocaine. Some cocaine.
SPEAKER_00You yeah, you've talked about it don't they have free hot dogs every day?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, free hot dogs. Uh that's where Jimmy Buffett first played. Uh his first gig in Key West was at the chart room. It's funny because that one Is it a dive bar? It is still that because it is in the Pier House, which is a fancy hotel. It's in a small spot in there. It's not advertised at all. It's only open after five. Yeah. The beers are very expensive because now it's owned by a corporate, but they allow the management to just keep it divey. So I think it still qualifies. Okay, because it is. I mean, you walk in, there's a lot of history in that bar. Dude. Nudie pictures on the wall, you know, that's that's a dive bar attribute, I think, is important. Florida, Florida just has, oh, and then we're missing one on Card Sound Road. Oh, Alabama Jackson. That's a good dive bar. Yep, that's a good one.
SPEAKER_02You know, I raised my children. I'm getting a vibe here. You go to a lot of bars in their lifetime.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, they say you mimic your parents, so Hank and we could do a whole episode on ski bars as well. Yeah, we could.
SPEAKER_00Hank and Gene, uh uh our dad's parents, were they were they liked bars, they loved dive bars. They like dive bars. And speaking of, see, cheers to them for the black label.
SPEAKER_02It was Father's Day last weekend, and of course, I went to Kelly's with my two sons, you guys. You know Kelly.
SPEAKER_01We had a great time. Yeah, that was ton and the and Chad's kids. Uh no real dive bar at Kelly's.
SPEAKER_00No. No, because no great bars, great traditions, phenomenal bars. No dive bars. No. What's funny is if you were to you could you could almost argue out to the microphone, please.
SPEAKER_01God damn it. Thank you.
SPEAKER_00You could almost you could almost thank you. You could almost argue that the the pump, the village pump. The pump's the closest. If you if you cut the new section off.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the bar itself.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the bar itself is getting some deep schematics there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we are getting some deep schematics.
SPEAKER_01It's about it's about time. It's about time. Anything else on the dive bar?
SPEAKER_00I can't believe how fast this episode. It's because we're talking a passionate.
SPEAKER_01The audience are probably really sick of our ramblings.
SPEAKER_02Well, keep uh talking about they talk about the teaks, of course. I'm uh show some b-roll right now while you're talking about it. I took some shots.
SPEAKER_01For the folks that are watching on YouTube, you'll be able to see that. Sorry if you're listening on Spotify, that we don't have a radio producer here, just a television person. You'll still hear you talking about it. You'll hear and you'll be like, look at the blue color.
SPEAKER_00That is we this was a very uh very uh this was a exploratory dive. And we yeah, maybe not as humorous as we normally are. That's all right. We don't have to be humorous.
SPEAKER_01Every time it's time for trivia,
Beer Trivia And Classic Brands
SPEAKER_01possibly. Okay, let's do a trivia. That's right.
SPEAKER_02Chad is drinking uh black label, hey Mabel, black label, or Carling's and it Carline's black label, and of course they sponsored the Indians back in the day. Oh, I thought you were about to say they sponsored us. I was like, wait, what? Well, there's that possibility. I just hope so. That'd be incredible. Carline had another beer selling the Canadian company they work at. Yeah, but another beer they sold. Do you remember what it was? You wouldn't remember, but you know what it was. Green label?
SPEAKER_00No. No, shut up. If it was green label, I was gonna good guess. Can we start naming colors? Yellow label. No idea. I just no, you just forgot the answer to your own trivia question.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Uh oh.
SPEAKER_02I forgot.
SPEAKER_01I know in Animal House they order carlings, but I don't think they order black label. It was an ale.
SPEAKER_02It was an ale.
SPEAKER_01Are you sure it just wasn't called carlings?
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, it was carling. I got it. I got it. Do it. Redcap. Redcap ale. So we were close with the color guys.
SPEAKER_00Get the historians to prove that? Uh Dad, I got a trivia question for you. Yeah. Um what was Captain Quint drinking in the movie Jaws? Well, that's at Nauga Set, right? Uh Narraganset, sorry.
SPEAKER_01Narragansett.
SPEAKER_04Nauga set.
SPEAKER_01Nauga set? Nauga set. It is funny how many people come in here and try to order that. I think one of the reasons that beer doesn't sell as much is because people try to pronounce it and they can't they go, uh, can I get a Narga Nargaducci? Now, to be fair, it took me about a year of working here to figure out how to pronounce that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Narragansett. They make great beer. If you spend some time up in the Boston area and/or Bar Harbor, you will drink plenty of it. The Scottish probably drank them out of that as well. They probably did. Yeah. They probably did.
SPEAKER_00Great bars. I'm racking my brain here to see if I missed any.
Oldest Bars And Global Dive Energy
SPEAKER_00The problem is we could talk about the couple of things.
SPEAKER_01We didn't do any international uh dive bars. Um I'm trying to think. I've discovered some of Ireland. I found some. Of course, I don't remember the names. It's tough to remember the names. I was in Ireland. I found some good ones. Hamber and I found a really good one in Amsterdam. Okay, yeah. Yeah. So that's uh it's tough to remember them all.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I got one. I got one. This might this might be the this might be the oldest dive bar ever. It's it's a place in London called the Ye Old Cheshire Cheese. I'm dead sick. It's a great name. Ye old Cheshire Cheese. You go downstairs and the the the uh right off right off the street, the stairs leading in are like those old sun. Oh yeah, and they're so tight that you have to almost do this to get down there. And I believe I'll I'll look it up, but I'm pretty sure it's from the 1600s.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, it's crazy when you go to Europe. Like, because I went to the one in um in Dublin, which is uh the oldest bar in Dublin, and it's like I mean, it you can barely get through the door because it's so it's by the Guinness plant. Don't make that joke. I know what you want to do. Don't do that. I can't? No. I haven't told that joke in hell. No, no. I'm not allowed. No, that's that's that's not good. It's not. Um, it's a you can tell that offline. Um is it too it's pretty funky, I think. Okay. People will ask about it after now. I'll I'll ask about it. Uh, you know, in New Orleans, Lafitte's Oh, the blacksmith bar.
SPEAKER_00Lafitte is a great bar. Half that bar doesn't have electricity from and they remember the oh, that is cool. God, Lafitte's is great. You walk in and they have lights to the right, to the left is all dark, a piano with candles on it, and that's it. There's just candles over there. No, no, no electricity.
SPEAKER_01What's the oldest one in New York? And that's I know it's gonna be in this book. I don't know my New York bars that well. Neither. Well, the oldest one in New York, does anybody know the know the you know it? I don't, off the top of my head. I know if somebody said it, I would know it. But yeah, no, I don't. It's a it's a staple and maybe someone could uh respond. Yeah, that'd be great. Yeah, okay. You ever watch the show Detroiters?
SPEAKER_00I started it, yeah. They have a great there's a couple we God, I could go on and on because I could talk about dive bars in shows that I watch. Yeah. There's a great bar in that called the Temple Bar. The Gem. The Gem's my favorite dive bar.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, the gem.
SPEAKER_00The gem? You know what, you know what show? No. Is that is that uh wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Uh that's the the the Western show, right? Yeah, Deadwood. Deadwood. Yeah. All right.
SPEAKER_01We're rambling at this point.
SPEAKER_00Yes, we are rambling. Sorry. Well, we we we like we like a nice dive bar.
SPEAKER_02But very informative episodes. I want to hear the display.
SPEAKER_01Highly recommend any of these dive bars for you to enjoy. I can't wait to hear if anybody comments like their dive bars except for that one in IO. Don't go there.
SPEAKER_00No, you don't want to go to that place.
SPEAKER_02Hey, one last thing. When we were driving to go catch the boat the other day, we drove through what prehistoric forest used to be in a Mystery Hill. Uh-huh. There's a bar there.
SPEAKER_01I don't think it's a bar.
SPEAKER_02It's not anymore, but there's a sign there.
SPEAKER_01Well, there used to be a bar there. That was uh Oh, I've been there. I took a date there. For sure. I took a date there once, and she freaked her right out, and she lived in Marwood. Uh this it says on a name. The dry dock saloon. Dry dock saloon. And boy, you walked in there, they had the creaky door.
SPEAKER_00That was a good spot. Uh you know what the problem is here. Now I just want to keep going. I know we're done, but you've got food beer over in Katabha.
SPEAKER_02That's the one I was going to do.
SPEAKER_00Well, food beer, of course. You've got the one on the way to Marion in uh on Route 4. Oh, you're talking about G and R uh Waldo. No, no, that's Waldo, G and R Tavern. The G and R Tavern. Which is fantastic.
SPEAKER_01We're talking about um Um Why am I blanking? Horseshoe? No, no, it's the way closer to only two. Only 25 minutes from here. Read Town Tavern. Retown Tavern. Yeah, that's a great thing.
SPEAKER_02It's a toilet outside. It doesn't, I think the toilet's gone. Oh no.
SPEAKER_01The toilet's gone. Anyway, we're we gotta stop. Okay, we gotta stop. All right, guys.
Your Favorites Next And Wrap
SPEAKER_01Thank you for watching. Uh we will uh please discuss dive bars. We gotta we gotta get a nice discussion. I want to know everybody's favorite dive bar. I do. We'll be back next week with a regular episode. But uh the dive bar was fun. I will report a little bit on that book. I'm gonna start that tonight. Nice. So nice. All right. We're out of here. Thanks, guys.
SPEAKER_03Uh follow us into the coming. This is now with the blunt. Let's go. Let's go.
