Bar Pod
Bars are one of the few businesses that don’t let you lie to yourself for very long. The numbers are real. The feedback is immediate. The mistakes are expensive. Bar Pod is a podcast about what it actually takes to build and run bars—and by extension, any small, creative, high-risk business—without the hype, the shortcuts, or the guru nonsense.
Hosted by brothers Ryan and Chad, Bar Pod is a candid, conversational series about ownership, operations, and the long game of building something that lasts. Ryan handles the day-to-day reality of running multiple bar and hospitality concepts, while Chad brings the perspective of someone balancing bartending, ownership, and family life. Together, they talk through real decisions, real mistakes, and real lessons learned the hard way.
This isn’t a how-to manual and it’s not a highlight reel. It’s an honest look at what works, what doesn’t, and why most good ideas live or die on execution. Episodes explore everything from finances and branding to staffing, burnout, risk tolerance, and knowing when to push—or when to walk away.
Bars are just the lens. The lessons apply to anyone who’s started a business, thought about starting one, bought a building, managed people, taken on risk, or tried to design a life with more freedom and fewer illusions.
Bar Pod is thoughtful, practical, occasionally irreverent, and grounded in experience. If you care about building things in the real world—and doing it without pretending it’s easy—pull up a stool.

People Cannot Work A Doorknob Anymore
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
$37.50 for two beers. A guest who cannot open a door because “nobody told me I had to turn the knob.” And a brand-new waterfront bar trying to build regulars while the cost of everything keeps climbing. That’s the chaotic energy we’re coming back with after a three-week midsummer break, and we’re not pretending July was calm.
We talk Tique's in Bay View, what the drink menu is built around, and why fresh-squeezed juice and farmer’s market fruit matter more than a bloated list of cocktails. We also share a simple way to make a whole weekend in town feel seamless, from downtown drinks to sunset at the water to a short walk back to your room. If you’re into hospitality, small business, or bar culture, you’ll hear the real stuff behind the scenes: staffing, stocking, pacing yourself, and trying to keep the vibe easy when the work is not.
Then we zoom out into the bigger forces hitting restaurants and bars: phone addiction, inflation, buy now pay later tools, and the subtle signs that people are stretched thin. We get into wildfire smoke, fireworks fatigue, theme park price gouging, and why customer patience feels lower than ever. Along the way we debate burger culture, shredded lettuce, fast food basics, the lettuce outbreak panic, and why espresso martinis are everywhere even if they are not martinis at all. We wrap with trivia, a rant about confusing mythology with history, and a teaser for a book on American drinking culture and happy hour.

Poison Ivy And The Midsummer Reset
SPEAKER_03I got a couple of random things too.
SPEAKER_01Uh you put And this doesn't even have to be this is this I th put the shorts thing. I was gonna talk about it's funny.
SPEAKER_03I'm actually wearing them right now.
SPEAKER_01I ordered some more on Poshmark.
SPEAKER_03I got uh Poison Ivy in there. Yeah, I got Poison Ivy. I want to talk about how to do that. You got poison ivy? Yeah. Well no, no, no, it's it's almost done. Oh yeah. It's such a childish affliction. It is.
SPEAKER_04This is how it's hey, here we are.
SPEAKER_01We're back after a three-week hiatus, and a lot has happened. We're season two, episode 10, I guess, because we're not starting a new season yet, because this was just a break, a midsummer break. Critiques, yeah. Because it's well, don't blame it all on me. You know, here we go.
SPEAKER_03It's already starting.
SPEAKER_01You get yourself in some comfortable shorts and you just get real fucking cocky.
SPEAKER_03We'll talk about those shorts later.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So uh a lot to talk about. Three weeks off it in July. Let's see, I'll just run through what I can think of right now. Teaks is open. We'll talk about that. Um, what else? We had all the the the food truck was here, the lobster fest, Iron Man happened. Gosh, what else a lot has happened? Well, July is insane around. The Odyssey came out, the Odyssey came out. Um SpaceX uh cut itself in half, uh, and then you know the stock's worth nothing now. It's dead. Uh so yeah, just a lot going on. So let me start out with I got poison ivy. You got poison ivy. That's no good. Unbelievable. T dubs back there, just want looking at the ceiling for some reason.
SPEAKER_00Is the lighting a little hot on a little hot on Chad, but am I blown out? A little bit on your cheek.
SPEAKER_03You know, I can feel it. I can feel the heat.
SPEAKER_00Can't you fix that in post? A little color correction, that'd be tough. Is it because of one face?
SPEAKER_03Is it because it's this right here? Yeah, yeah, it's blown out, isn't it? I know I can feel it coming off my uh my sheet. Really?
SPEAKER_01I'll see what I can do.
SPEAKER_03Fu LA's.
SPEAKER_01I'm not too confident, but I'll try it. Well, we're not uh not that professional here, so it doesn't matter. Yeah. What are we drinking here first? We're drinking Coronado Salty Brew. Salty Crew. Salty Crew. Yeah, California brewery, I believe.
Teeks Opens With Fresh Cocktails
SPEAKER_02We haven't had them in a while.
SPEAKER_01There it's good. It's got like a little lime taste in it. That's good. I had it over at Teeks, and then I thought it was so good I decided to get it here too.
SPEAKER_05It's really good.
SPEAKER_01Um so yeah, Teeks is open over in Bayview. It's uh going well. People are digging it. Um I uh I'm like really I'm really happy with the way it's going.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I've heard nothing about good things.
SPEAKER_01The view's good, the bar's good. Uh we got good staff over there.
SPEAKER_03You found out you got to a place where uh you you Ryan's been over there, you've been burning the candle at both ends.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for a little bit there, I've been burnt the candle at both ends. Um but uh things are starting to land a little bit, so I feel like I got a little more time to I'm gonna start. I'm back to bartending here on Saturdays. All right. Uh which is nice because I kind of miss this place. Yeah. Because I haven't been hanging out here enough. Yep. Um and uh yeah, so go check out Teaks.
SPEAKER_03So, real quick for the for the listeners and the viewers here that haven't um you know caught up to speed with Teeks, what's uh as far as drinks over there and stuff? What what what's the main deal?
SPEAKER_01Our deal over there is um um fresh uh berries or fruit that we get from the farmer's market to put in. We've got two signature drinks over there, one's a mojito. Okay. Uh and one is called the Old Bay Bridge, and it's a bourbon-based drink with muddled uh fruit in it. Okay. That's kind of a that's kind of the thing there. Um you can get a paddle bar lemon shake up there too. I like that. Um fresh margarita. So everything's fresh squeeze over there, or fresh squeeze and juice like like paddle bar, but not as extensive. It's a smaller menu.
SPEAKER_03Sure, sure. I heard some good things about the uh transfusion that you're making.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, we have a transfusion over there too. Yeah, a little little nod to the golf course folks. I like that. I like that. People dig that. Um and uh yeah, it's been good. The views are good, it's like that laid-back vibe that I want. You know, you sit there, relax, listen to some chill music, and uh check out the bottom. But you hear some bot some bottles in the background moving around. It's because Saturday bartender's doing some stocking right now. Oh, I like that. I like that. That's going on. Um so as a matter of fact, and then the cedar's going well, the hotel uh is doing well. As a matter of fact, I put a discount code in. So if anybody of our listeners listen to BarPod, go to the stay at the cedar.com and type in barpod fan. Stop 15% off your room. 15? 15. Whoa! Go over there, which you do. Here's how you do it. Here's how you do it. You start at downtown, you book your room, start downtown some dusky, you have a nice afternoon at Paddle Bar. Yeah. And when you're ready to wind down, you go over to Cedar, watch the sunset, have some drinks at Teaks, and then you uh walk the 37 seconds to your room. I like that. It's a good move. That's the move. Sounds like a comfy situation. All right, so that's what's going on over there.
SPEAKER_03Speaking
Comfort Shorts And Lululemon Confessions
SPEAKER_03of comfy, yeah. You brought up my shorts.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um you have really embraced comfortable shorts.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, recently. I Amber got and I never listen. I'm wearing shorts right now. You can't see on here right now. It's it's warm in here. I see a little bit of a sheen on your stash. Sweat in here.
SPEAKER_00What is going on? Chad, move your hand over here. They keep it there. Then it doesn't blow out on your hand anyway.
SPEAKER_01Is it that bad? Do we have to stop the show here?
SPEAKER_00Not the best. No, we have no option.
SPEAKER_01Well, we could try to move that surfboard in front of that window. Well, I'll keep my hand over here. How about that? All right. Anyway, let's get back to these shorts. He's stressing me out. He keeps looking at their like it's goddamn, you know, Saturday Night Live production or something. It's a couple assholes running a stupid bar pod. It's not that big a deal. Point taken.
SPEAKER_03If I'm a little blown out, just be like uh, you know, like like like like mid-20s. No. Uh I'm wearing shorts right now that don't have a belt loop. Yeah. Don't have belt loops. Yeah. And it feels a little bit odd. Okay. And I with comfort comes a little bit of sacrifice. Right. There's not a lot of. You do sacrifice some style. I am sans wallet right now. There's no wallet. Because yeah, you'll bulge you out. There's no it's not even there. You can't do it because I put it in the back pocket.
SPEAKER_00Um like mine with a little boat with a little tie.
SPEAKER_03I don't know if you're wearing I don't have a rope in my shorts. So anyway, with comfort comes a little sacrifice, but I will tell you, I'm I am enjoying it when it's hot outside. Yeah. And you don't have to worry about a belt. Yeah. And uh speaking of hot, I'm turning the air conditioner on down here. It's freaking roasting. It's warm in here. Um, but and and and another thing, I never thought that I'd own a pair of Lululemon shorts. Well, and I gotta tell you, bud.
SPEAKER_00What? That's what I'm wearing right now.
SPEAKER_03Amber got them for the biggest. I don't think it's even popular anymore, which makes sense. That's why I'm wearing it. I think it's felt fallen quite fallen off. I gotta tell you something.
SPEAKER_01I went and bought some Lululemon shorts. Oh no. You dropped your signature pencil. So what are you gonna do? You're gonna go get it.
SPEAKER_00I could run over behind you so people can see my wonderful face. That's not gonna happen. Ryan does.
SPEAKER_03Ryan's got long arms. Oh god's got long arms.
SPEAKER_01Thanks, dude. Um, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Got a Lululemon pen.
SPEAKER_01Listen, I bought some of those shorts. I bought them. You bought what? I bought some Lululemon shorts. No. Comfortable shorts. They're like kind of a waffle pattern. And they do have a drawstring.
SPEAKER_03What are we doing here?
SPEAKER_01They are fantastic. I mean, everything's comfy downstairs. It's like a I got air conditioned down there. I tell you. Um I'm telling you. And I uh I like them so much. I don't care what they look like anymore. I used to be a little bit I'm pretty still anti-sweatpants in public. Oh, you can't do that. But I am I am into this, and I gotta tell you, I ordered some more on Poshmark. That's where Amber got mine. It's freaking crazy expensive.
SPEAKER_02That's where Amber got my.
SPEAKER_01So I'm not paying 60 bucks for shorts again. But uh so I found some on Poshmark that'd be arriving Friday that I'll be wearing a lot too. I'll tell you what. I've even been bartending in them.
SPEAKER_03I'll tell you what is the well now that's you can tuck the tolerate in it. Sure, sure. Uh the moment any of us start getting um shoes with Velcro on them.
SPEAKER_01That's a that's a step too far.
SPEAKER_03Then that's that's that's when you know things are. That's a step too far. But I could see it happening. Yeah, so could I.
SPEAKER_00Does that count if you have Sketcher slip-ins?
SPEAKER_03You're that's another step. Uh Sketch pun there.
SPEAKER_01Another step. It's a tough argument because you know we've both been proponents of uh, you know, thong uh sandals. Thong? Flip-flops.
SPEAKER_02Oh, flip-flops.
SPEAKER_01Slide is well, they're called thong sandals. Who calls them thongs? The the the Japanese. They do, they do.
SPEAKER_03All right. Well, flip-flop. I'm still rocking flip-flops. It's summertime.
SPEAKER_01I got some Berks going on with summertime. It's a little more comfortable. All right, but what do we do in here? So that's what we're talking about. Why do I have something about really dumb baby seagulls on the notes?
SPEAKER_03Those are the ones that hang out.
SPEAKER_01Oh, they're so that we yeah, that's another thing we went through while we were off is the baby seagulls that just hang around. Dad is so preoccupied with this sun. Would you stop it? You're driving me crazy. I won't. Just relax, it's gonna be fine. Or we can fix it right now. Do you want to try to fix it? We can't fix it. Yeah, we can. We can put that surfboard in front. I don't know if that's too tall. I don't think the angle's gonna do it. I can get right in there. Dead too tall, Jim. I'll climb right there right now and do it. Let's try it. Let's stop. Okay, hit
Baby Seagulls Fireworks And Wildfire Smoke
SPEAKER_01pause. We fixed the the light thing, so maybe T double calm down a little bit back there. So you're missing a uh whatever that was. Sound dampener. Jeez.
SPEAKER_00I'm a damn professional. Sorry.
SPEAKER_03Well, listen.
SPEAKER_00Use that term loosely.
SPEAKER_03I will say I uh my temperature went down.
SPEAKER_01That's good.
SPEAKER_03You turned on the AC, and then I don't have a Yeah, I turned on the AC all over the game. No, uh back to back to your little baby seagulls. They do they hang out in the middle of the road and you gotta wait for them, kind of like the geese thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I feel bad for them because they're they're wildly dumb. I watched one just walk, he was walking into uh a door, he just kept walking into it. Mine? Mine? Mine? Yeah, mine, mine. Mine, mine, mine. That's a great show. Uh fireworks happened while we were gone. It was the 4th of July. Yeah. You know what? Chill with damn fireworks, people. Like, what is the I don't I understand on 4th of July night, you want to see fireworks, bing, bang, boom. Kids love it. But like for three weeks on both sides of 4th of July, every asshole is out there lighting fireworks. It's like, you know. Do something good with yourself instead of burning things. You know what I mean? God, and shut up. Somebody. I I don't like it. It's annoying.
SPEAKER_03I went. So there you go. That just reminded me. I gotta I gotta bring it up. I went to get my hair cut yesterday at uh with Amanda. Shout out to Amanda over at Roseav um salon over on Perkins Ave. They do a great job and they're super friendly in there. Yeah, right on. Um, but she said she's been watching the um older always sunny podcast. I gotta check it out. And reminded me that you look like, or not you, you act exactly like Dennis's Dennis, which is uh the character Dennis? No, no, no, Glenn.
SPEAKER_01Oh, Glenn. That's better. Because if I act like the character Dennis, I probably should be committed. No, Glenn.
SPEAKER_03She's like, she's like, it's just, I don't know, it's just the way that like he gets all fired up about everything. Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_01That's what we like about speaking of fired up. We also had the uh the Canadian wildfires. Oh, yeah. Uh also the American wildfires, too. Oregon. All these dipshits that we're blaming Canada really pissed me off. Because you know what? That's what we can control. The fucking wind. Right. Idiots. Right. Thank you. That was my rant. Oh, there it is. Well done. I mean, did you say did you see the jerk from Ohio, Bernie Marino? Oh, we're not. You see what he did? He tried to make legislation to tax Canada because of the wildfires or something? What is wrong with you?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, let's worry about that, not about the people that can't afford health care and food.
SPEAKER_01So there's my political rant. It's it's it's you know it's ups, it's absurd. But it did suck for business too, I will say that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, you had to get a big thing.
SPEAKER_01You had to close down teaks and uh in inside here, people were running in.
SPEAKER_03It was during the Iron Man thing. Oh my god, it's caught one down the wrong pipe there.
SPEAKER_01Hey, did you see our mugs?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Look at that.
SPEAKER_01That was from Surfer Steve.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Those are pretty sweet.
SPEAKER_01Yep. All right. So that's the that's the rant stuff. That's what's been going on.
Phone Addiction And Inflation Anxiety
SPEAKER_03Um I saw a thing the other day. You you put you put something on here about um Americans spending half their time watching TV. Yeah. Which oh boy. I saw a thing the other day about how the average American spends five and a half hours on their iPhone per day.
SPEAKER_01That's not good.
SPEAKER_03That's crazy. That's not good. But then I thought about it, I was like, you know what? I bet you I'm not far off.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_03I'm always I mean, it's around me all the time. And we're checking it.
SPEAKER_01Which watch podcasts too. I mean they're they're saying it's a fun shortage. Americans are spending all their time on their phones, they're not going out, and they're not golfing as much, they're not going to bars as much, they're not going to movies as much, even though the population's growing, they're not doing as many things because they're addicted to their phone. Now, granted, this is probably brought to you on your phone. So my hypocrisy only goes so far. Nice tombstone. Very good. Yeah. Uh, but I do think that there is something to get out and do some more stuff. I think we're getting a little nuts. Um, I haven't seen a lot of restaurant industry stuff on my social feeds. I mean, this is what we're supposed to talk about. So we should. Well, it's good that we're talking about it. Yeah. Um the cost of everything is definitely going up. Uh, restaurant industries uh in general are seeing um not only the cost of food is going up, but people like last year the restaurant industry only grew 3%. So the cost of food rose higher than the people that are coming, which technically means it's a decline. And they're saying that that is um a good sign, a boy, a bad sign actually, of a impending recession when the restaurant industry starts to do that. And these costs are nuts.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's like, oh, so so it's funny you bring that up because you could talk about a few things that point to exactly what you're talking about. Um two things I saw were that we right now are in the midst of a 33% surge in grocery prices in the last year, which is pretty insane. That's not good. Um, so that's not restaurant business, but that's food in general. And then, like I said earlier, I alluded to the iPhone thing. I don't know if that was on our soft opening, but um now Apple came out with um and let me see if I can word it correctly.
SPEAKER_01They came out with a like a low, like a low budget phone, like a like a like a value phone.
SPEAKER_03Well, no, they they've had that. They've had that. Now you can instead of buying it outright or going through your sprint provider or your whoever you're with, basically, to do it, you can get an iPhone instead of you know, you can get it for $7.99 a month or anywhere from $7.99 a month for an iPhone for a regular, like the base model iPhone through their using Klarna, go figure, because that's what everybody's using. I don't know what that is.
SPEAKER_01What's Klarna? It sounds like a suppository.
SPEAKER_03It's a it does. It's like a lending.
SPEAKER_01I got my Klarna prescription. You don't remember those jokes? Remember Oh, like Karma? And like, oh, it's like where you can like oh, I got you. It's like a it's like layaway for modern times. Correct.
SPEAKER_03People are like, people are like laughing about people doing Klarna for a for a Chipotle order. I I got you, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's where we're at. People are doing layaway for burritos.
SPEAKER_03So all of what's all what's all this stuff tell you, right? What does all this stuff tell you? Nobody has any money. That's what it tells you. And then and then and then on top of that, you've got I saw a stat, 49% of people under the th under 30 are living with their parents.
SPEAKER_01So I I think every Well, when you have an alien as the richest guy in the world, what? Doing his best to suck money from everybody. Yeah. That's what happens. He's a huge dude. Yeah. He is someone somebody I ran into somebody the other day, and they're they love the fact that I called alien uh Elon a uh alien from Planet 4 or whatever it is. Yeah. Um He's an odd dude. Yeah. And then so yeah, you're right. That's that's not good. Uh I think we are a little bit isolated in our area to a sense, because uh we are, you know, a great tourist destination, and um when people can't afford their bigger trips, they tend to do regional stuff.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I think we're we're you know, we're we're lucky there. However, I am a little concerned about a lot of things I'm hearing from across the bay lately. At Cedar Point. Oh. Run by six flags. Well uh. I've heard some, you know, that the products, the quality is going down and stuff like that. I'm hoping that that's not the case. Maybe it's just six flags in general, not so much Cedar Point.
SPEAKER_03But we've been over there a few times. You had a good time? Um we had a blast. Yeah, we had a blast. I will say some things were closed that I thought wouldn't be. But other than that, I mean it was it was good.
SPEAKER_01I will say Cedar Point has always been the queen of uh the Great Lakes. Watering places. Watering holes, what I was thinking. A lot of different placing.
SPEAKER_03Speaking of this, it's clean over there. It's so good.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so Cedar Point's safe. That's what I like
Cedar Point Sticker Shock At The Bar
SPEAKER_01to hear.
SPEAKER_03This is a very, you love trivia, and I'm gonna give you a little, I'm gonna give you a little guessing game here. And this is this is very um apt for our our podcast here. I bought when I was over there the first time, um, two 16 ounce medellos for Amber and myself. All right.
SPEAKER_01So that would be if you had a 16-ounce Modellos, it would be $10 for two of them.
SPEAKER_03I press the uh yeah, we're here, yeah. I press the 18% tip thing on the little credit card thing.
SPEAKER_01Right. Always, sure.
SPEAKER_03Go ahead and guess how much my my order was for two 16 ounce medellos with tip. 26?
SPEAKER_01Up unlike unlike unlike SpaceX, we're still going up.
SPEAKER_03We're still going up.
SPEAKER_01$40?
SPEAKER_03$37.50.
SPEAKER_01Holy shit, for two 16-ounce medellos?
SPEAKER_03And you wonder, and you wonder. Did they come from Mexico? Bro. And you wonder why people get upset with the system. That's not cool. $37 for two beers. Get the f out of here.
SPEAKER_01Get out of here. I don't like that at all. Come on. It's it's tough to try to keep things. That's why the little it's tough for a little guy to survive, you know? They're just gouging everybody over there.
SPEAKER_03Now, I yeah, and I I get it. You know, that's not the target audience is not dudes and and you know, people drinking beer over there. I get it. But that doesn't mean no, it doesn't mean that you can just pillage somebody for 40 bucks for two beers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I I I like the old days of Cedar Point, I gotta be honest. It's a little little chiller over there. Um, did you know that 49% of adults under 30 are living with their parents? I that's what I said earlier during the little thing. You said that? You told you I didn't pay attention. I was too I was dad was freaking me out with the light. Now that we're okay, I can get back on track here.
SPEAKER_03Um, but you know what? I mean, honestly, is it is it it's probably smart. It's probably smart for those folks.
SPEAKER_01Sure it is, because you can't afford a house if you're you know right the the the the the uh you're under 20, you're not you can't buy a house. You you know you can it's just I tell that story all the time screwing everybody in.
SPEAKER_03And you did a very similar thing, but I drove out to Colorado when I was 22 with 900 bucks in my bank account and made it work. You can't do that anymore. There's no way you can do that. I worked at true value. Ace hardware. Ace is the place with a friendly hardware, no.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, friendly hardware, no, not hardware face with Ace is a place with for the friendly hardware place.
SPEAKER_03That's not it. Let's get into some more. I think I feel like we've been negative. Are we? Let's yes, let's positive it up a little bit here.
Becoming A Regular Plus Hotel Horror
SPEAKER_01All right, here I got a question. Um, so Tix has been open for three weeks now. Yeah. And like I already have my regulars, um, and it's awesome. Um how long does it take to become a uh a regular at a bar? Well that's interesting.
SPEAKER_00That's a good question.
SPEAKER_01You know, how is it is it just going three days? Is it three three days to sit in at the same bar?
SPEAKER_03It's tough because when you're on vacation, you you really can lock in the whole.
SPEAKER_01You can't lock into one button and feel the regular, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Feel the regular vibe, but I don't know if that actually makes you a regular.
SPEAKER_01I mean, we were regulars at that bar in uh in uh Idaho. Yeah, what was uh name of that town? Driggs, Idaho. Driggs. What was the name of the bar? Uh the bird. The wolf's I thought it was wolf. No, wolf.
SPEAKER_03It was a wolf.
SPEAKER_01Wolf wolf neck, wolf's wolf's mane, wolf's jaw?
SPEAKER_03The wolf the wolf.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_03When we left, they were like But see you next year, boys. See you next year, boys.
SPEAKER_01Probably because we drank copious amounts of teila there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I don't think that makes you a regular though, right? You gotta put in more time in three or four days.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so there's a so you're saying there's a difference between a regular and uh man, I don't know. It's tough to say. Okay. I don't have an answer to that. If anybody has any.
SPEAKER_03Somebody give yeah, somebody give us a little love in the comments are any opinions on that. I'm gonna say it's gotta be longer than that, though. That's a you're a temporary regular at that point. Because you can't be regular, you're not back for another year or however long you come back.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. You know what else I got? Uh that that's been that's kind of negative, but whatever. If it has to be. Hey, if it has to be, it has to be. This is kind of funny, though, because I think people are people are getting real dumb. They really are. Oh no. I had this person. Uh oh. Here we go. A traffic ramp. No, this isn't traffic. This is some of that too. But this was at the mo at the at the hotel. This this guest stayed, and I'm not gonna say that person's name, but I highly doubt they're bar pod listeners. And I can tell you right now, they won't be coming back to the lodging facility because I won't let them.
SPEAKER_03Uh-oh.
SPEAKER_01I get a text in the morning. We need more towels, we need more coffee. Well, that's no problem. Yeah, we have a we have a room that you get a code to, and then you can go and um grab your stuff. And you can grab your stuff and take it back to your room, and we keep it stocked, and it's great. It's got books and games and all kinds of cool shit. Um, anyway, so this person um could not figure out how the code works. You it's so very simple. You enter the code, you turn the knob, the door opens. All right. Um, property manager over there went down and did it because she goes, I can't figure this out. You guys didn't send me the right stuff. She was just yelling, just yelling, and also she snuck her dog in the room and didn't report it. Um, and um so property manager went down there and opened it for her and turned it and opened it. And she goes, Well, nobody told me I had to turn the knob. No, no, no, nobody told me I had to turn the knob. That's our robot inside. Nobody told me I had to wake up in the morning and do shit.
unknownLike, what?
SPEAKER_03I will say you idiot. I will I will say I set her I set her straight too. I was hot. It is insane. Uh I feel like I I feel like you uh you brought up people are getting worse and worse at problem solving.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Do you think it's do you think it's because of everybody's going to their phone anytime they have a problem?
SPEAKER_03And it's funny, it's funny that I'm saying that's a good thing. Some of these people can't figure out how to wipe their own ass. I'm saying problem solving, like trying to like how figuring out how a how a knob operates is a problem.
SPEAKER_01What would you do? Like go take a picture of it with your phone and put it in JAT TV. How do I use this device? And they're like, Well, that's a device from the 1950s. It's called a doorknob.
SPEAKER_03That's a dustbuster.
SPEAKER_01What uh that's a dustbuster. What is that one? Oh, come on.
SPEAKER_03This little handy thing called a dustbuster.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_03Future movie that they would go back in time. Oh, you're really close.
SPEAKER_01Oh, oh, oh man. Back to the Future. Well done. Back to the Future 2.
SPEAKER_03Back to the Future 2.
SPEAKER_01The dark horse of the Back to the Future movies, I might add.
SPEAKER_03I I still love it. I still love it. What else did we do? Don't work on water.
SPEAKER_01Didn't we have the Unless you've got power? That's when he's in front of the clock tower, and he's trying to, Marty's trying to paddle with a little Barbie surf the little Barbie hoverboard. You know, crazy. Like we kind of have hoverboards now. We're pretty close.
SPEAKER_03You shoot or know how to hydrate a pizza. Yeah, all right. I'm done.
SPEAKER_01He's just going with the Back to the Future two quotes.
SPEAKER_03I got a little love from somebody, somebody the other day in the bar was saying that their favorite part of the podcast is when we quote movies. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00Which oh good. Could you get a little closer to the mic, Chad, please? Fuck off.
SPEAKER_03Hey, oh that's not my vibe. What's going on here? Kidding, yes, I can.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'll try to get as close as I can. Thank you. Eat the mic. Yeah. Eat it. I, you know, that's another thing. I was supposed to get us some booms number. I was going to do that. What happened to that? Budgets. Budgets. Budgets. It's a tough thing. This works, all right. Cost of goods are up there. If you stay close enough to the mics. Speaking of movies, if uh I would argue that Back to the Future 2 is one of those ones that was a lot of people say that's the worst of the series. Yeah. But if you go back and watch it, you like it the more you the more you watch it. It's like what Ocean's 12. That's what I was going through. Ocean 12, which I would say Ocean's 12 is actually my favorite out of the Oceans now.
SPEAKER_03It's funny because Ocean's 12, you're right. I think I think the lay person will say it's the worst. But it, dude, it is the the same people that can open a doorknob. Probably. The dialogue in Ocean's 12 is the best by far. Oh, Lost in Translation? Oh my god. When I was eight years old, I watched my mom kill a spider with a tea cozy. That spider. Years later, I found out that spider was my uncle Harold.
SPEAKER_01I'm not familiar with that one now. I love that one. Go home and watch Ocean's Oceans 12.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, I've seen it. I guess haven't been a little bit more than that.
SPEAKER_01It's called The Lost in Translation with it. And they're sitting in a restaurant. Oh. Yeah. Matt Damon's trying to trying to you know be part of the crew and it's not working. Clooney and Pitt are just screwing with him. That's a great thing.
SPEAKER_03What's the Zeppelin song he tries to sing? What's uh uh cashmere? Cashmere? You're doing cashmere? You just called his daughter a cheaper. Don't tell him that. Don't tell him that.
SPEAKER_01And she's currently confined to bed with a serious case of no, don't tell him. Don't tell him that.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_01Um, what else we got? So that was my asshole guest thing, no problem. That was easy. All right, you guys. Um you want to get to that?
SPEAKER_03Has anybody else? And Ryan put this on the notes, so but I'll bring it up regardless because I'm in the same boat. I am
Burger Review Culture And Fast Food Debates
SPEAKER_03catching the burger review guy on Facebook nonstop. Oh, you get him on Facebook? I get him on Facebook.
SPEAKER_01You get him on the tick, TikTok.
SPEAKER_03You're getting him on TikTok?
SPEAKER_01Uh so the burger review guy, I think he's out of Elmore, Ohio. He's crushing it. And he goes around and he reviews burgers. I've seen him. You see him? And I gotta say, at first, I I didn't, I was like, I don't know. I don't know if I like this guy, but I'm starting to like him. And I like his shtick. All right, you guys. All right, you guys. He comes out, yeah. He went over to Putin Bay. Oh, he crushed the burger price place. That was hilarious. Yeah. Those people are gonna pay $3 for a burger, crap burger anyway. But he did uh, I think Boathouse did good, and so did um uh the boardwalk. And the boardwalk? And that would make sense. But I don't think he did Joe's, because Joe's actually has a really good burger. I know. I know. That's too far off. But now I'm eating burgers and I'm going, oh, dreaded, shredded. Dreaded shredded. Dreaded shredded. The shredded lettuce versus the lettuce. Okay, you ready for this? This will go. We've talked about lettuce before, I think, on the show.
SPEAKER_03Wendy's. Yeah, Wendy's Wendy's switched to the dreaded shredded, yeah, no good. So burger of you guys right on point with that, because the shredded lettuce sucks. You gotta have a piece of lettuce on a burger.
SPEAKER_00You need to crunch.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I like the crunchy. I had a burger yesterday, as a matter of fact, at a place in Cleveland, and uh it was it was the taste was okay, but it was all soggy. Uh-huh. And so not only did I have the crunch, but then later I had to crunch.
SPEAKER_03He's got the he you gotta remember, he's got he's got a thing, you gotta have a toasted bun, which I agree with. I agree with toasted bun, brioche bun. We need to take a bar pod trip to his restaurant. I think we should. He's got two, I think. He's got two. Oh, the guy has a little bit. He has restaurants.
SPEAKER_01I think in Elmore, Ohio, I think is where it is. Put his money where his put his mouth money where his mouth is. I think he reviews his own restaurant once in a while. He'll like surprise his staff and do a do a full-on burger review. That's actually cool. Yeah. So anyway, I'm with you. Anyway, burger review guy, if you're out there, check us out on Barpod. Yeah. All right, you guys? You're crushing it.
SPEAKER_00I also saw a thing on Facebook the other day. This uh it's a tasting table. It's uh it's a national. And they uh uh they talk about the big three burger chains. What is the best? What do you think which one got for a double cheeseburger? So between McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's? Yes, which one got number one? Oh Wendy's? No. Burger McDonald's.
SPEAKER_02Burger King. Burger King one with flame with the flame broiled. Flame broiled.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Flame broiled. It does seem like Wendy's has been, and I I'm not a fast food kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_03No, it's dropped off.
SPEAKER_01Um, so I don't know that much, but you've you've said that Wendy's has dropped off. Although you can still, I did a cheap, I did a they got rid of their sweet and sour sauce. I did McDonald's yesterday on my way to go mountain bike in Cleveland, and I uh I got a I was lost like needed to get some food. So I did a sausage McMuffin. Oh. And a uh uh iced coffee. Okay. And it was like 460 or something like that.
SPEAKER_03Oh, pretty good deal. McDonald's breakfast is solid. I don't care what's in it.
SPEAKER_00It's I mean, I'm sure that yeah. Wendy's has the best fries of the three.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Without a doubt.
SPEAKER_03Really? I like McDonald's. So now you've got all- I don't really order fries that much. You've got all the different things. This is gonna be all, we don't have to keep going on it, but you've got you've got Wendy's is fresh, never frozen, right? Right. That's their thing. Square burgers. Right. Burger King is flame broiled. Flame broiled. And McDonald's's is.
SPEAKER_01What is theirs? Uh I don't know You're loving it? I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I'm loving it. What is it? I hate those. Uh I don't. McDonald's is the least of my favorite least favorite of the three anymore.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but those little onions they put on are pretty tasty on a double cheeseburger. You guys have loved their double cheeseburgers for years.
SPEAKER_03I have, but in the past I did like a double cheese. You can't even order from a a person now anymore. I hate that.
SPEAKER_00Hate that.
SPEAKER_03And you know the the amount of poop that's on those screens? So do you know that? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's like your cell phone, there's fecal matter everywhere.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and it's other people. I don't touch other people's cell phone screens. You're touching that screen all the time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I do like that because I I don't like to talk to people very much. You like touching poop? No, I don't like that part of it. But you can you can do it on your own phone beforehand. That's true. That's true. But then of course you're just touching your own poop instead. Jeez. Let me let me one one more thing.
SPEAKER_03We'll get we'll get out of it. This is a shitty conversation. We'll get out of this thing. Have you been in the Chipotle lately? I have not. Have you? I've tried. I can't you can't do it. You can't do it. Every time I walk in, every time I walk in, there's a line out the door because so I just don't go. I've tried it three times and I haven't, so I'm done. Yeah, I if I see a large cue, I have a tough time. What are you British? I like that Q. I like the word Q. If I see a large Q. I mean like a like like an uppercase. If I see a large Q, I'm out of there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if I see a large you know uh alphanumeric symbol. Um, we have six minutes left already. This is going fast with that. Hey, oh, speaking of news that happened while we were gone. This is fun. The Great Lettuce Outbreak that made everybody collectively shit their pants. Explosive.
SPEAKER_03Did you make me have the shit there is yes last the proof episode? This is gonna be the proof episode. Oh, it is. Did you I kind of made I I was at a golf scramble um at Sawmill, and it was it was the the height of the cyclospora. Is that what it is? Cyclospora was a cyclospora cyclocora outbreak. And everybody, when you went in, they had a nice like lunch setup, and there was just a huge bowl salad sitting there.
SPEAKER_01And everybody's just getting near the mic, Chad.
SPEAKER_03Everybody's just smashing salad. I walked right by it. I walked by it. Oh, I won't eat it. There's no chance. No. No chance I was getting in a uh a buffet style salad during that thing.
SPEAKER_01No, no. It turns out eating just you know drinking beer. That's what you want to do. You can't nobody's gonna unless you drink like 30 of them. Well, yeah, if you drink a lot of Bud Light, you're probably gonna have some problems or some natty light. Sickness. Uh I got a hot take.
Espresso Martini Backlash And Summer Food
SPEAKER_01Can we just chill with the espresso martinis everywhere?
SPEAKER_05God.
SPEAKER_03Where'd you go? Where'd you go that espresso martini?
SPEAKER_01No, I just I everybody asks for an espresso martini all the time. I oh my god, did you hear about the new espresso martini that happened in Mary Mary? It's it's all it is is some chocolate shit with some beans on it. Get it, get it. Well, it's because it's not, for one thing, it's not a martini. All right. I'm gonna argue that right now. It's candy. It's it's it's it's a it's a mixed drink. A martini is a proper martini.
SPEAKER_03I'll give you that.
SPEAKER_01Vermouth.
SPEAKER_03I'll give you that.
SPEAKER_01Agreed.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you shouldn't even be allowed to say you're drinking a martini if you're drinking no chocolate.
SPEAKER_01You're drinking an espresso crew. You might as well go to Wendy's and get a frosty and toss some fucking beans and some alcohol on it, and you're good.
SPEAKER_03Okay, now speaking of that, speaking of that. Sounds pretty good. You gotta give a look. There's a couple places. The problem is there's a couple places in town that make for the people that like that stuff, they make a really tasty one. So it's like, I know, but uh, it's not my thing. I agree. Dad now is onto something. Oh, he likes oh, he's putting bourbon in his bourbon into a milkshake the other day. Yeah, I heard.
SPEAKER_00That's a good one. That was superb. Was it? Yeah. Where'd you get the milkshake? Uh golly gee. All right. Malt or I like a nice malt. Huh? This was just a vanilla milkshake.
SPEAKER_01What are you, back in Hill Valley and Back to the Future one there? You like a nice malt?
SPEAKER_03I'm wearing stretchy shorts, stretchy waistband shorts. Uh uh, you know, I'm before long, I'll drink a nice malt.
SPEAKER_01Have a nice malt.
SPEAKER_03Dad's got a rope. Yeah, you just did it too. What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_01I'm not ordering malt and ovaltine yet, but okay. Amber makes fun of me for putting pepper on everything. Nobody like the ovaltine job? I thought that was pretty good. Ovaltine. Nobody's got a little primatine mix. That's a whole different thing. Pepper? I love pepper.
SPEAKER_03Amber said it's an old person's uh condiment. No. Agreed.
SPEAKER_01Pepper's the best condiment.
SPEAKER_03Agreed.
SPEAKER_01I love pepper. I'm growing some tomatoes right now. Me too. I got 13 tomatoes by a pot. I only got like eight. I got excited about it. I am very excited. One of them came, it turned, it looked like an eggplant, but it was ripe, so I tell you they ate it. It was fantastic. They won't have seasonal. I just ate it with a little salt. Yeah. Pop. Oh, cut half the salt. Gotta have the salt. Just I ate it raw with a little salt. It's funny. It's funny. So good. I used to hate tomatoes. I used to hate tomatoes.
SPEAKER_03Now I can eat them like an egg.
SPEAKER_01Now they're sweet. They're lovely, lovely fruit or a veggie. Hey, since fruit, right? They're a fruit.
SPEAKER_03Since we're out in the garden, they're a fruit. Since we're out in the garden. Yeah. I uh I told you, I got a real childish childish thing happened to me. I feel like childish? Childish. I got poison ivy. Oh. We talked about this the other day. I'm I used to be allergic to that. I think I mean it. It's almost gone. But is is that not is that not one of the one of the most like childish things you can get as an adult, I feel like. Like I was out playing with my friends, I got poison ivy in the creek. Yeah, what were you doing down in the creek? Yeah, exactly. Well, how and and it's so annoying, dude.
SPEAKER_01It takes forever to go away. Did you get it while you were golfing? I was weed whacking. Oh, I thought maybe you hit a golf ball in the weeds there and had to go fish for it.
SPEAKER_03I've been known to be in the weeds once in a while. But yeah, no, I I can't uh no. It's horrible. You forget how it because you you go how bad you uh get that? Pretty bad. On your leg? On both legs.
SPEAKER_01I uh I once had uh poison ivy in a region of my body that won't be discussed, but it sucked.
SPEAKER_03Oh in a region in your body, you had it in your bowel? Well, close. Real close.
SPEAKER_01I didn't want to go that far. You had an idea. I was out playing in the woods or doing whatever. Like I got it everywhere. Everywhere. Yeah, all it would hurt so bad and you're itching. Not good. I've always wanted to be able to do that. You're itching the matter where you want to itch, you know?
SPEAKER_03What would happen if you got like your face and stuff, dude? That'd be brilliant. I've had that happen too. Remember when that happened?
SPEAKER_01I was like my eyelids swelled shut. What? I remember that. Yeah. I looked like a it was not good. My eyes, I had to go take me to the hospital, get a shot.
SPEAKER_00Not good. So that you're talking about naughty bits. So maybe time to move on to trivia.
Brick Street Trivia Odyssey Rant And Wrap
SPEAKER_03Naughty bits. Let's hear it. What do you got?
SPEAKER_00Okay. Okay, now what's the only street in Sandusky? Now, the one in front of your bar, paddle bar, there's some uh old bricks in that one, but it's not really in the street, but it's close. You know, it's bricks right in front of the the library here and the park facing. Yeah, yeah, there's yeah.
SPEAKER_01Shoreline had bricks as well. Yeah, but any street, almost any street in Sandusky had bricks when they were ground, you see it.
SPEAKER_00Still one street in Sandusky. It is bricks.
SPEAKER_01I don't know the name of it, but it is south of the uh the the railroad. I was just on Columbus Avenue. And you know who would get it? McKenzie knows that street right there, but it's I don't know. It's the first left. If you were going south Columbus Avenue before you go on the first left. And the name I don't know the name Homestead Street. Homestead Street. I would have never got that. Homestead.
SPEAKER_00You guys got it though. That's pretty good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think that is going. I wish we had more brick streets. I like a nice brick street. You know, I think I think I think Sherline Drive would look cool, all brick. But I think they had to tear that up when they did um you know which uh town. She's a brick house. You know which town has a lot of brick streets.
SPEAKER_00Athens, Ohio.
SPEAKER_01Hey little OU shout, maybe. Yeah, that's that's nice.
SPEAKER_00Uh I'd say it's getting close to wrap this thing. You got anything?
SPEAKER_01What else you got? You got anything to do? Look at him calling the end of the show here.
SPEAKER_00Uh- Well, that's why you call me the producer, don't you? No.
SPEAKER_01Do you hear We call you the assistant producer?
SPEAKER_03Oh no. No. He did uh we did take care of the lighting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he did. He produced that light right that thing right up there.
SPEAKER_03Um one more thing on the way out here, entertainment-wise. Did you I haven't seen it yet and I'm stoked to see it. Did you see the Odyssey?
SPEAKER_01I saw the Odyssey.
SPEAKER_03It's great. Did you guys both see it? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's great. Wonderful.
SPEAKER_03I can't wait to see it. I haven't.
SPEAKER_01Speaking of that, did you see what Elon Musk said? Oh no. Was it about the Odyssey? About the Odyssey? He probably hates it because it's woke. Right, right. It's woke. I don't know how that's woke. I don't know how it's woke, but woke. You know what? Fuck the word woke. Stop it. I'm still waiting for my doge check. I woke up this morning. Wait for my doge check. Right. So Musk said. And this is why I don't know that this guy, you know, he's supposedly so smart in all this stuff. I don't think he is. He goes, I'm gonna make remake the Odyssey using Grok or whatever. And he goes, and I'm gonna make it I I'm not gonna make it so fictitious. It is a in it's not a true story.
SPEAKER_03Okay, now you got me worked up. Yeah. Now we're getting worked up.
SPEAKER_02Everybody keeps talking about I I saw it constantly. The Odyssey, oh, it's it's it's it's not it's woke. There's uh those people didn't exist back in the time, blah, blah. It's not historically accurate. It's not a fucking history piece. Yes, it's fictitious.
SPEAKER_01It's not a real story. Also, if if you think that's woke, you'd have seen what the Greeks were doing back then in real life.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Does everyone do those same people know that they think a cyclops is real? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's mythology for it.
SPEAKER_01It's mythology. This is back to the stupidity factor. It is up there. Anyway, that that was a fun. I like the Chad ended with a little fire. I did. I don't see that earlier. Yeah, it's fired up.
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, you know what?
SPEAKER_03I got that's got a special place for me because I loved reading the Iliad and the Odyssey when I was younger.
SPEAKER_01You read things?
SPEAKER_03I did not anymore. Not anymore. No, but it's it's it's just hilarious. It's clear people don't understand what they're talking about. Ah.
SPEAKER_01Well, speaking of reading, I got and then we'll we can wrap up after this. I will report on it next bar pod. I got a new book. It uh it's called The Hour. And it is about it was uh released in like the 40s, and it's about the American experience of drinking and happy hour. Happy hour is the special time of day. It's where people communicate, let down, and it also talks a lot about a proper martini. I didn't see any fucking espresso martinis in the 1940s. Okay. I think I'm losing the battle on espresso martinis. Listen, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go have a nice espresso martini.
SPEAKER_03They're not for me, but I I like I, you know, I get what you're saying.
SPEAKER_01I will say I do like a nice uh I'd like a nice ice latte uh at the middle of the day to wake me up. Maybe an espresso martini would be the move. You see what I mean. My coffee's over there, iron me up. You know what? I'm gonna espresso martini and Aperol spritz and get out of here. Oh boy. Oh boy. Aperol spritz. We have those at uh Teeks as well. Yeah, those here now, too. Yeah, those have gotten popular.
SPEAKER_03They have. I'll tell you what, it feels good to be back, though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's good to be back.
SPEAKER_03We started off a little wonky with the lighting and whatnot. Yeah, we gotta get back in our flow. This this show seemed a little off to me, though.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. It got better and better as a show went on.
SPEAKER_03Well, the more we I feel like the more we cuss and uh you know what I mean, talk about buttholes and stuff.
SPEAKER_01Oh talk about poison ivy on your tank. Oh no, well teasing. Taint you very much. Uh we'll be back with another episode next week. I am gonna talk about that book and hopefully we'll have some more. I do think the problem, the hard part with this episode was we had so much happen in three weeks. I had a real hard time putting it on paper and figuring it out, and uh, and I'm just all over the gym.
SPEAKER_03And I gotta be honest, I didn't add anything to the show.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you didn't do it. You added one thing the whole time. Three weeks off, and he didn't add a goddamn thing to the notes. It was all me. So that's probably why it was bad because I'm not that good at this point. It's a good show. All right. Anyway, hey, we'll see you next week. Sounds good. And uh, don't get any poison ivy on your biscuits.
SPEAKER_04Ryan Gentleman, coming out. This is now with the biggest.
