Bar Pod
Bars are one of the few businesses that don’t let you lie to yourself for very long. The numbers are real. The feedback is immediate. The mistakes are expensive. Bar Pod is a podcast about what it actually takes to build and run bars—and by extension, any small, creative, high-risk business—without the hype, the shortcuts, or the guru nonsense.
Hosted by brothers Ryan and Chad, Bar Pod is a candid, conversational series about ownership, operations, and the long game of building something that lasts. Ryan handles the day-to-day reality of running multiple bar and hospitality concepts, while Chad brings the perspective of someone balancing bartending, ownership, and family life. Together, they talk through real decisions, real mistakes, and real lessons learned the hard way.
This isn’t a how-to manual and it’s not a highlight reel. It’s an honest look at what works, what doesn’t, and why most good ideas live or die on execution. Episodes explore everything from finances and branding to staffing, burnout, risk tolerance, and knowing when to push—or when to walk away.
Bars are just the lens. The lessons apply to anyone who’s started a business, thought about starting one, bought a building, managed people, taken on risk, or tried to design a life with more freedom and fewer illusions.
Bar Pod is thoughtful, practical, occasionally irreverent, and grounded in experience. If you care about building things in the real world—and doing it without pretending it’s easy—pull up a stool.

The Bar Towel Rule
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
You can have the best night of the week and still end it with a five-gallon bucket in your hands. We start with pure bar-life reality: the doors are locked, the lights are off, and then we spot a curbside disaster that forces a full cleanup at 1:52 a.m. That turns into an honest look at what bar ownership and bartending actually demand after last call: spotless standards, constant repairs, and the behind-the-scenes runs that keep a place open even when customers never notice the effort.
From there we zoom out to what’s changing in nightlife culture. More bars are leaning into Gen X because they show up early, spend reliably, order “real drinks,” and tip better, which is why nostalgia nights and yacht rock are suddenly a serious business strategy. We talk about whether that trend matches what we see locally, how live music schedules shape the room, and why a city with strong events can still keep a healthy mix of age groups.
We also get into AI in social media marketing and why it’s starting to look painfully obvious when brands stop sounding human. AI can help, but unedited captions and fake-looking images can make a bar feel soulless fast, and we debate what kind of guardrails should exist as the tech accelerates. We close with a new segment idea, a few local beer shoutouts, and the bartender debate that matters more than you’d think: the most important tool behind the bar, and why the humble bar towel might be the real MVP.
If you liked the mix of bar stories, small business reality, and practical bartending takes, subscribe, share the show with a bartender friend, and leave us a review. What’s the messiest thing you’ve ever had to clean up at work?
Quick Setup And A Big Question
SPEAKER_00Episode twelve, season two. Season episode twelve, season two. Is that right? Fuck you. I gotta look like hold on. Buzz sprout, and then we'll go. Oh, of course. You know, what why is it why does your phone just randomly log you out once in a while? Oh, yeah, yeah. What is that? Passwords. This is episode twelve. We hate them. Episode twelve. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Ryan.
SPEAKER_00This is how it is. Hey, it's BarPod season two, episode twelve. I just wrote the script about two minutes ago. Well, we've been taking notes all week, though. I know. This is I'll tell you what, this was a scramble to get here and get this done. This is starting to become a little bit of a work for you. I don't like that.
SPEAKER_01We usually do this around 11 o'clock. It's 1.30.
SPEAKER_00It's 1.30.
SPEAKER_01Everybody had a little bit of a dastardly morning.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Just kind of sperm of them. It's okay. Yeah, it's very nice. Hey, I got uh one for you to ponder and then we'll get back to it later. Okay. And you can think about this while we're going through the pod here. Um what is the most important tool in bartending? Oh. I already know. I mean, at least my opinion. Okay. Well, you have it, and then we'll go from there. All right. Um, here's what we're gonna just do uh what's going on, and then we got some maybe a new recurring segment to talk about too. This fly is cut, you got a fly. Can I hit you? Yeah, do it. No, I'm not gonna do it. Oh my god, that was way more of a hit than a I got him. Did you get him? No. Okay.
SPEAKER_01All you did was smack me in the head.
SPEAKER_00No, I perfect. I think I did get him. I think he fell fell down behind you there. I done I did got him. I did got him. Oh boy. You can tell it's August. Yeah. Angry August, as I like to call it. Yeah, they do. Um anyway.
Weeds Complaints And City Grumbling
SPEAKER_00Okay. Um this week, what happened? Uh let's see. Um, got a text. Uh you were uh we you and I did some weeding out in front of Paddle. We did. And then uh I got a text that someone complained that we weren't. Now there's beautiful flowers out there. I would say it was we had a local resident complain, apparently. The the timing was we too we did it. It's right. I just was walking by. I didn't even notice that weeds were growing there. Yeah. You know, it's just this tiny little tree. But it is amazing, and no offense to retired folks out there. Yeah. But get a hobby, man. Stop walking around the city and just finding things to piss and moan about. Well, I think it's like a bunch of Tim Schwang Schwangdong. Oh boy, yeah. We yeah.
SPEAKER_01But you gotta watch out. Some retired people stay busy and some don't. And the ones that don't yell about weed. Yell about stuff.
SPEAKER_00God, calm down. Anyway, so anyway, we got taken care of. It is a uh beautiful beautiful flower stuff. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01I have to uh water those today, by the way. If you don't water them three times a day or twice a day, they they don't grow very well. Yeah. We got freshly planted flowers. Need hydration.
SPEAKER_00I had a random thought today.
SPEAKER_01No, there's a spider on my thing.
SPEAKER_00We gotta get them. It's because we're in the basement. That's the only thing. Yeah, a lot of bug work down here. Uh I had a random thought today. Let's hear it. This morning. Let's hear it. I'm not gonna tell you what I was doing while I was thinking. But I was I was you know, in morning routines. Um if you are gonna be I've been told to lay off the poop talk,
Meme Coins And Feeling Grifted
SPEAKER_00so here's what I'm have you been? Well, yeah, okay. Hints. I think that we should start a meme coin, bar pod coin. Oh, you know, I mean, yeah, just because if I it feels like right now in in the in the world in society, if you're gonna grift people, oh if you're gonna just do some shady shit, now's the time. So we're announcing barpod meme coin. Feel free to invest in that. And then and and and we'll you know, we'll take we'll just enjoy a barpod coin.
SPEAKER_01The level of grift right now is pretty is pretty high.
SPEAKER_00It is just feel free to airdrop some money and we'll give you a meme coin.
SPEAKER_01Do you hear and the the funniest thing I've seen lately is it's not I'm not I'm not gonna go political, it just made me laugh as the um the commander-in-chief there is doing hundred thousand dollar access to their API, their API, so you can you know get basically information for the stock market for insider trading a little quicker than everybody else. I don't think I've ever seen a more obvious, like blaring. You're not supposed to do that.
SPEAKER_00No, that is that is really screwing uh it listen. I'm not gonna dive into it, but it does seem like the middle class is getting screwed right now big time. If you're a little business owner, if you're someone, you're getting you're getting they're coming at you, man.
SPEAKER_01Pretty crazy.
SPEAKER_00I've got to be a little bit of a lot of people. That one's in your face.
SPEAKER_01That one's in your face. That one's really in your face. That one's in your face.
SPEAKER_00If you're to if you can't see that you're getting grifted right now, it's like it's like if you screwed. If you if if if you don't what's that saying, you know, it if you don't realize you're the sucker you are the sucker. Yeah, you don't know you realize you're the dumbest in the room. It's probably you. That's from uh Rounders. Rounders? Yeah. Great movie. Oh, speaking, there's your movie quote right there. Great movie. Ten stacks of how many stacks at high society? 10? Three stacks at high society. Three stacks of high,
Class Reunion And Zennial Nostalgia
SPEAKER_00right where you started. Um one more thing else was going on. I had my 30-year class reunion. Oh, you had it here last week. We had it here at Paddle. How was it? That was a pretty good time. Um it was yeah, kind of. It's as if everyone had swelled. What movie is that? That is um Let Me Go For It. Gross Point Blank. Well done. Very good. Well done. Um, I things that in your class reunion uh versus I mean, I I think last one I went was my 20th, so it's been 10 years, so this is 30. So obviously, but the things you're worrying about when you're getting ready, the things you're like, all right, I gotta clean myself up a little bit. You know, you're shaving nose hairs, eyebrow hairs. Oh sure. No, that didn't happen uh in the past.
SPEAKER_01You're looking clean. Yeah, we haven't Gen X.
SPEAKER_00My my I have a weird my class uh is is is a weird we're considered the born 78? 78, so we're considered the uh Zenials, that generation that's between Gen X and Millennial, where we had both analog and we're the you know, we were still like Latchkey kids, but we had the had the um you know also we we were we we understand technology because we we were there at the beginning of it, but we also remember yeah like actual telephones and rotary dials and things like that.
SPEAKER_01Well I see that's why I'm I'm I'm like I think I'm like first or second year considered what's considered a millennial.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you're barely a millennial. I mean, you could probably argue that you're 82. Same thing as me. I mean, you remember VCRs and things like that. Just set tapes. And you know, probably you live in the Midwest, it's a little it's it's a little you know, technology doesn't adapt. Um so that goes into some bar news
Bars Betting On Gen X
SPEAKER_00that I read this week. What do you got? Bars are giving up on young people and catering to Gen X instead. Giving up on young They're uh they're pivoting away from younger drinkers towards Gen X who spend more reliably. I would agree with that. Uh they're using nostalgia nights, like like a Steely Dan night, a yacht rock night.
SPEAKER_02Oh count me in on that.
SPEAKER_00They're showing up early, they order real drinks, they tip better, and they're home in bed by 10 o'clock. That's beautiful.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_00Instead of having to stay out till 2.30 a.m.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. All right. I could see it, but here I feel like around here, we've brought this up before. I feel like we're a little a little uh different. A little a little shielded from from that uh greater trend, don't you think? I don't know. I the Midwest Midwest is still a little bit like I see Friday night when I was bartending. I I agree. It was a very young crowd.
SPEAKER_00I think Paddle Bar does a good job of catering to kind of everybody. Yeah. I I see a lot of transition during like like for example, tonight we've got live music, Galen's playing tonight. Yeah, so you'll see like a Gen X, my age sort of crowd. Uh even mom and dad's age sort of crowd start out a little earlier, get some cocktails, enjoy the deck, why the sun's so up, and then Galen will wrap up around 10. And then there'll be a little push around 10 30 with the with the uh the the what are they called? What are they what are they now? What's a 21-year-old Gen Z? Uh no older than younger than you.
SPEAKER_01It is what's it called now?
SPEAKER_00Gen I have no idea.
SPEAKER_01Z is the last you know, part of the alphabet. So I would where do you go from there?
SPEAKER_00I don't know where it is after that.
SPEAKER_01Uh but I agree. I like that I feel like Synussi's got a nice little melting pot of uh age groups in comparison to what they're saying on the broader trends of things.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, you know, but we did something uh last winter we did that um uh drunk history, which I was I was skeptical that that would work, and that was McKenzie's brainchild. And she nailed it. That was great. We're doing it again this winter for sure.
SPEAKER_01I will say this though. Uh it was definitely nobody under the age of 35.
SPEAKER_00No, no, that was catering to Gen X and above for sure. But it was cool. I enjoyed it, except for a couple nerds, which I kind of like. There were some younger nerds there. Oh, some yeah, which I appreciate because I did I've always done that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, I was I was love got him.
SPEAKER_00Got him? No, I didn't he's up there. No, he's up there.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, yeah. No, it was awesome. It was awesome.
Distracted Driving And Podcast Tangents
SPEAKER_01Um I see you've got a note about everyone, everyone's distracted.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I was out driving, I did the same club run the other day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um and I I dude on the I'm sure everyone will probably agree with this. It's it's way more evident than anywhere else when you're driving a vehicle.
SPEAKER_00It's crazy. I it does what's more evident, just people are just distracted and and yeah, it's tough right now. It's tough out there, kids.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was uh driving from uh our house uh down here.
SPEAKER_00Is he gonna get into the the famous uh 250 to Strub Road turn? No, no, no, because Columbus Avenue, straight down here.
SPEAKER_02Sure. Someone was driving 23 miles an hour. That's too slow. Strumbo Strub Road to Perkins Avenue.
SPEAKER_01We're talking that's a 45 MPH zone.
SPEAKER_02Yes, it is 45. 23 miles an hour. Had a line of traffic all the way back to NASA. That's right.
SPEAKER_01That's tough. That's tough. There's part of me, there's part of me that says, where's where you need to have some wherewithal. What are you doing? Then there's another part of me that thinks, you know what? Maybe just you're 85, do whatever the f you want.
SPEAKER_00You'd think that, and this comes from what television show, uh famous television show, you'd think that as you get older you'd drive faster because you have less time on this earth.
SPEAKER_01Wait, who what I don't know that one? What TV show?
SPEAKER_00Oh, Seinfeld.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I was gonna say it. I was gonna say just the way it just the way it sounded.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Uh anything else in there in that in that mode?
SPEAKER_01In that mode? No, no. I can't drive this fucking show. The line I know I do we rely on. I like to spiff off it. Yo, dude, I'm telling you, the more I listen, yeah. I know, I'm listening to it. It's great. Anybody out there, um, it was um Amanda from from Roseav is the one who told me to listen to it. I had no idea it existed. It's the Always Sunny podcast, but they only did it for like three years, and then it got, and then they just stopped. Is that right?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I I mean there's definitely multiple seasons.
SPEAKER_01There's multiple seasons, but they don't do it anymore, so it's all older stuff um up until 2023, I think. But yeah, it is hysterical, dude. And it's only on Spotify, right?
SPEAKER_00You are when it I did see some similarities here.
SPEAKER_01He'll just he'll just start going and then he'll just start talking a little bit louder and just god damn it anyway. Oh, it's uh it's hysterical.
SPEAKER_00You know, although this fucking fly is gonna get me doing that. I'll tell you what. Three flies, five flies. We got flies coming for us.
SPEAKER_01Get out of here, you goddamn jackass.
SPEAKER_00What that's no way we brought the Winnebago man, which everybody should uh Google that or YouTube that immediately. Yeah, because that was called YouTube it.
SPEAKER_01I got a fun, let me break into a little fun.
SPEAKER_00Then I want to talk about oh you're no, you're jumping ahead. Oh, I am. I see where you're at. You're on the late your Friday train.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I didn't even turn the page yet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you're you know, why do I write this fucking thing if he's just gonna not even look at it? Why do I write this stuff? Like, what I I I put all this, look at this. This is four pages of shit, and you're not even paying attention to it.
SPEAKER_01Why do you have a pencil then? Just throw it away. I've got a real free-flowing attitude, you know? Well, let's Glenn.
SPEAKER_00Stick to the script, man. That's why we we that's the work part of it.
SPEAKER_01Um there's just a whole bunch of dots. I can't even see. Um okay, so you talk to your shit first then.
SPEAKER_00Well, I was still on we're trying to have some sort of fucking flow in this thing. I'm trying to stick to the see, we're still on the we're on the bar news segment here.
Too Much AI On Social Media
SPEAKER_00Yeah, bar news is important. And I think brands are using too much AI in their social media. You can tell. I mean, I don't get me wrong, I like AI too, and I use some of it to create graphics, but it's getting too obvious. And like and like it's you can tell there's not a human writing it, and then they're just they're not even editing, they're just putting on their social media page. I think it looks dumb.
SPEAKER_01My paddle bar post today was uh written by me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, do some real stuff. I mean, I I don't again no problems using AI to assist you, but I just feel like it's it looks dumb.
SPEAKER_01Do you think we've we've we've sp spoken about AI a lot on this podcast throughout the episodes? Do you think how or what what's going on? Do you this brings up a fun thing to talk about? Is it going when are we gonna reach the point?
SPEAKER_00You said fun? You mean you mean are you talking Terminator 2 fun? Or I thought that kind of fun.
SPEAKER_01I don't want to get killed by a fucking 10-foot-tall robot. But we Sky Net Skynet. When's when's when's the when's the saturation point coming? Well, it sounds like you're already there.
SPEAKER_00Here's what needs to happen. Well, yeah, there's too much. I mean, you can't believe any anything you see. There's like but you can tell AI when like a like a bar or a restaurant or any business puts it, just all AI. It's pretty clear what they're doing. Like, you know, their Google reviews, they they respond to them, and yeah, I'm guilty of some of that, I admit. But I I I think it's best to just put some human interaction in it and not make everything an AI image. Um goddamn robots, John. You saw that the uh both Anthropic and Chat GPT broke out of their AI environments and hacked other institutions. I did. Yeah, that's not good. No. Here's what I think is gonna happen. Here's what I think should happen. We're at a tipping point here.
SPEAKER_01There needs to be guardrails.
SPEAKER_00I believe the government should put some guardrails on AI now because what'll and and I say that with I like AI and I it can do very good things for society, I think, but we want to progress in a way that we can control. Okay. Instead of some crazy things gonna happen, and then what's the the backlash will be over-regulation, and then China's gonna kick our dick to the dirt.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so here's what I'm saying, though, but we don't have a very good history of doing things with balance. No, we don't moderately. No, we always what have we always said in this in this family? We've always said capital. Folks in Hiroshima would agree with you. Capitalism with a conscience is what you really need, right? No, god damn it, I heard it.
SPEAKER_00That's just a nuclear joke.
SPEAKER_01Right, right? Capitalism with a conscience. Right, capitalism with a conscience. We as so we alluded to earlier.
SPEAKER_00Pendulum swings too far all the time.
SPEAKER_01Right, as as as as we've alluded to in this podcast early, capitalism right now does not have a conscience, right? So who's to say AI is and how we approach it? It's not going to, because uh, I believe the current the current um people in charge signed an eight-year runway for AI without any guardrails. Is that correct?
SPEAKER_00That's I don't know that I don't know the I don't know if that's true or not. So just I think there does need to be some regulation, but regulation with like let it let it progress. I mean, gosh, the the the ability for help with medical problem solving. I mean, you get a new, you know, you might be able to get a new leg anytime. I don't know. Third leg. Third, all right. No uh chat help with that. Let's get out of that AI stuff. Let's move along here. Let's move along. Uh fuck it.
The Ugly Side Of Closing Time
SPEAKER_00What happened Friday night? Oh okay. Let me set the tone for you. Give you a paint you a little picture. This is gonna get into a little bit of if you wanted to open a bar, yeah, here's the shit you'll deal with every week. This is one of those. This is one of those.
SPEAKER_02Please set the tone. Let me set the tone.
SPEAKER_01Uh great Friday night. Uh a good mixture of uh of of aged people. You get you had the early crowd, you had the late crowd, young youngins. Right. It was great. Great night. Um, but as you know, on Fridays, I'm I'm here on a regular basis until about two in the morning.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's on you, Bubba. Yeah, no, I know, but I like that anymore.
SPEAKER_01Listen, I like to clean the place. I like to be able to eat off the ground when I leave here. Anyway, so picture me, I'm sweaty, I'm gross. There's uh I it was a very busy Friday night. I did everything clean to a T. I had everything the way I liked it. Yep. Mopped, uh Swipped, mopped, everything. I swipped, everything uh swipped and mopped. I had the bathrooms clean, okay? I had everything done. And it's about 1 52 a.m. And I'm going, you know what? I'm ready. I'm gonna get out of here. I'm gonna turn off the lights, I'm gonna lock the doors, I'm out. That's not a poop story. No, I sense it. No, this is this is a a liquid. It is a body fluid. It's a body fluid. So I walk out the door, everything's locked, everything's dark, and I go to take a step off the off the curb, the front curb here, towards my car on the other side of the road, and what I I I look down. Just the largest pile of pepperoni pizza puke you've ever seen. Oh no. And alliteration aside, just it was disgusting. God, so what did I do, right? That's not you can't leave it there. Correct. So, what do I do? Boom. I take off my backpack, unlock the door, turn all the lights back on, fill up a five-gallon bucket with soap and water. Yeah, and I basically take care of the puke situation. So 15 minutes later, I finally leave the premises, but that is after an outside uh puke cleanup. Which listen, I understand some people over imbibe, some people just can't handle booze and they end up puking. Everyone's done it at some point.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, I mean, they could have just been yeah, they could have they could have been walking by here. Who knows? They probably were on the way from somewhere else. Who knows where they're coming from?
SPEAKER_01So, no, nothing against the person that did it or whatever. It happens.
SPEAKER_00No, actually, I have a little bit against that. But you know what? Learn how to fucking drink without puking in front of a bar. Or at least go and do it in a bush. You know what I mean? Stop. This is not a vomitorium. Hey, you know what, though? Stop with the pub. You know what, though? You know what? You know, I puked when I was 16 learning how to drink. Not when I was, you know, 25. Like, come on. I'm glad they didn't do it in our new landscaping. No, that would have been upsetting.
SPEAKER_01I just said go do it in a bush if you could. If they did, it would have ruined our new landscape.
SPEAKER_00Well, was the landscape? Landscaping wasn't done yet at that point. Because didn't we do it early? We did it Saturday, didn't we? Saturday. Saturday or Sunday morning, I think.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Anyways. I can't keep track of the weeks anymore. No. But anyway, so yeah, you can imagine how that was brutal, right? Just out there. Shrubbery. Shrubbery.
SPEAKER_00Foliage.
SPEAKER_02What movie?
SPEAKER_00That's uh Monty Python's uh Holy Grail. Holy Grail, yeah. Shrubbery. Cut it down with a herring. Um so well that then so then you had to deal with that on Friday night. Then I get here on Saturday morning. I did notice some puke uh vagrance there, but it was cleaned up pretty nicely for two in the morning. It was definitely pizza. So then why am I here on a on a Saturday morning? I'm here to um fix the music thing, which stopped working. The music player. Um I had to this is after going to Teeks to fix the cooler that stopped working. A brand new cooler. Did you modify it with your fan? Yeah, I did. Okay, did the fan modification? Nice. Um now it's working. Um and then uh let's see, Meyer, Sam's Club, and the bank, all before we open again on Saturday morning at noon. That's a hell of a run. And that's so all those things is after, yeah, and after you were busy. That kind of goes to show you the things that you deal with, the behind the door shit of owning a bar. Yeah. It is a lot. It's a lot. And and you're not we're not and people just don't give, they will break things, man.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Didn't somebody rip something off the wall in the bathroom? Somebody ripped something off the wall in the bathroom. I don't know what that was. There's there's just two scrolls and remember what it was?
SPEAKER_01I don't know either. Listen, it happens. And we're not, you're not, we're not asking for, you know, you're not asking for um anything special. Anyone who owns a business or works hard, you get it. You get it, you get it. It's just a lot. But uh, but yeah, you know, a bar is funny because there's a lot of grit behind the scenes. There's grit it's gritty. It's gritty. It's gritty. It's gritty. Yeah. Oh, we just lost a light here, Bub.
SPEAKER_00That's alright, producer. I don't think it matters. Doesn't matter. Battery powered, I would assume. Still looks pretty good. Chad, you have listed here. I don't know, but you're not paying attention, so maybe you don't. First time getting drunk?
First Drunk Stories And Bad Decisions
SPEAKER_01You know, I thought I thought I I was I was in bed one night kind of thinking of fun ideas to talk about. Yeah. And um I I'm not even sure. Actually, I do, because it was with you. Steamboat? In Colorado. Yeah. And that was the first time I had a few drinks. But I don't think that was very it wasn't very it was pretty uh it was very mellow, but I just thought maybe you had something fun. Mine wasn't very fun.
SPEAKER_00Um I did, I did get I the first time. Do you have an early time getting drunk? I do. I do that was a little out of control?
SPEAKER_01I do. Um it was it was during my high school graduation party.
SPEAKER_02At our house? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Really? Yeah. Oh yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And we got a with somebody, so we were drinking, right? And I'm not gonna name any names. But um I had to be there. Oh, you were there, you were there. It was on the on the you know, on the the old homestead there.
SPEAKER_00So it was pissing in the field.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. That's the same thing. We were all doing the ceremonial pee in the field situation. Um and then and then somebody called the police because we were loud, and one of my friends who oh freaked out.
SPEAKER_00He like thought he thought he was gonna go to freaking, you know, Mansfield.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so the police officer shows up, and my one buddy takes off into our house, and we found him about 15 minutes later, completely changed into my clothes in my closet. Thinking he was gonna, you know, roll out and fool the feds.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, and the Perkins PD came up top, yeah. Settle down a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Settle down a little bit, quiet down a little bit with your boys here. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I think I think the police got called uh over at the end of Pennsylvania Avenue a few times over the years. That was more you than me, huh? I think it was more our parents, actually. They had some Rangers back in the day. I don't think it was us at all. They did.
SPEAKER_02When I got the truck stuck in the field. Well, that was a different network. We're going wild here.
SPEAKER_01You almost lit the field on fire one time, too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you almost let the field on fire back then. I didn't almost. I did.
SPEAKER_01You did.
SPEAKER_00With a fireman.
SPEAKER_02My neighbor.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Right. We're not gonna we're gonna say any names here though, but he's retired now, so it's probably okay.
SPEAKER_01You almost single-handedly caused the uh you know, the air quality to change in an area.
SPEAKER_00The field's on fire. I don't have a good beginning. Pacifico? Pacifico. It's good. We're drinking Pacifico. I forgot to shout out the beer. Yeah, I don't, you know, I I remember kind of, you know, this might lead to bigger problems down the road, but I remember the kind of the first time I got a little toasty. I think it was high school and I was at a party somewhere. Yeah, and like I got a like a buzz. I don't think I just a couple beers, and I was like, this feels great. I was I remember because I walked home because it was it was it was in a neighborhood, I think it was in Birchwood, so it was near our house. Yeah, I remember walking back going, God, that feels so good, man.
SPEAKER_01You know, I've been I was an uptight kid, so a couple cocktails, I felt much better. I don't know if it's because our mothers pretty much put the fear of everything into us. But I was very afraid. I I didn't have many wild tensies in high school. It wasn't until college. I I was very afraid that like I was going to do something horrible. Oh, I was driven.
SPEAKER_00I didn't loosen up until college because I was scared of it.
SPEAKER_01Basketball team, or like you know.
SPEAKER_00I was scared, I was scared of all kinds of stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. All of a sudden I was gonna get drunk and just you know, do something horrible. I know I was gonna get drunk. I was scared of a narrow disease.
SPEAKER_00I was just gonna jump right out and jump off the person by it.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna get drunk, it's gonna slide in, I'm gonna get somebody pregnant.
SPEAKER_00Oh that's true. I was always worried about that. Always worried about that. It's the truth, though. And you know why? Because this one would give you now. Do you're I think around age 14, we started getting fucking well, maybe not you as much, because you were, you know, you got good grades, and you know, you were a very good kid, and I was I did not. Um so every somehow he weaved it into every like so I would get you know my report carter midterms, and it would be mediocre, average, and but somehow he would he would get into like you're never gonna get into college, you're gonna throw your life away. Okay, you are fucked. But then somehow every time he would also work in if I got some chick pregnant, he would work it into I got a C, which means I impregnated someone.
SPEAKER_01Listen, and your life is over, you are done, you will never I don't even I think I'm okay with it because I was I it it didn't thankfully it didn't happen, and it turned into blue rodent. It was good. Oh, there you go. Jesus. Well, did I say that out? I did, kind of did. You did bleep that out. You did cut that, cut, cut that, cut that, cut that, cut that.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's gonna be cut. No, don't leave it. Leave it. Oh, I may put some sound effect over it. Leave it. It's fine.
SPEAKER_01You should do college. You should do like uh Tom Petty did in the song. Yeah, Brown, we get to the joint member. It used to say let's roll another joint. Yeah. And then when they put it on the air, it said, let's roll another. Oh, I'll deal with it in post. Yeah, you deal with it.
SPEAKER_00But I don't I think we should leave the leave the general je ne sais quoi of it all.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's probably that's but see, you see that? So so it turned out my idea about first time getting drunk. I'd say leave it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So and then, yeah, and then I I think we were at a wedding somewhere, and I had it was the first time I like had unlimited access to booze. Yeah. And it was like, I remember drinking like a half bottle of Canadian club or something, and I just remember sitting in a shower on the cold floor, yeah, like for hours going, why did I do that?
SPEAKER_01And it was you know that so when young kids when young kids have access to um booze and party party environments, wild things happen. I told you about and you know well about this. When I worked over Putin Bay, uh my buddy and I were sitting at the margarita place at um, oh, this is the Mexican cheese dick store?
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. Oh, please tell this. Oh, this is a great story.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. So we on one of our days off of Putin Bay when I was living over there, um, we went up to Rita's and we were just drinking up there and enjoying ourselves. And that was after some, you know, some day drinking. Yeah. Um, and then we just started coming up with random shots. The first one we dubbed the Mexican cheese dick. And everyone knows back then they had a uh they had a nacho cheese dispenser up there. So we ordered a shot of patron with nacho cheese behind it as a chaser. And the the the the bartender looked at us like we were crazy. Yeah. And so we ripped a shot of patron and then followed it, followed it back with a chaser of Mexican cheese, of nacho cheese. And then right after that, we got we we came up with uh what we called the Irish meatloaf. The Irish meatloaf. Yeah, it was uh it was uh Jameson, and then you put some ketchup on your hand, and then you had loose taco meat behind it. So you ripped the Jameson, or you lick the ketchup, lick the Jameson, and then and then eat the taco meat, the loose taco meat, and that was an Irish meatloaf. This is it was out of control.
SPEAKER_00This is this is still in uh Putin Bay lore. I was 24, 23. People have heard about the Mexican cheese deck. Yeah, unbelievable. Fun times. South Bass. Oh yeah, craziness.
SPEAKER_02Uh my first uh was in Athens, Ohio.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02A pint of cherry vodka and a date at a horse barn. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Just outside of it.
SPEAKER_01Was that the last date?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, oh, absolutely it was, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Cherry vodka and a date at a horse barn. You you blew chunks?
SPEAKER_02Oh. Big big. Really impressed my date.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but that's a good way.
SPEAKER_00That's the way to live.
SPEAKER_02I can never to this day look at a bottle of cherry vodka.
SPEAKER_00I don't think they make it anymore, do they? I'm sure they do somewhere.
Pour Them Another Or Cut Them Off
SPEAKER_00They do. Uh we got a new segment we're gonna work on. Well, we kind of tried a wins and fails segment, I think, really early. Did we? Did we? Or we talked about it? I don't know. Well, here's what I got. I guess a segment we can go pour them another or cut them off.
SPEAKER_01That's it. So you are you gonna ask me a question?
SPEAKER_00So pour them another, or yeah. I mean, well, no, you'll have your own, and you know, so for example, I have one right now. Let's hear it, and it's a cut 'em off. Oh. So that would be a fail. Cut 'em off. Cut 'em off. What do you got? Bucky's. Oh, the uh the gas station. Those fuckers are cutting. We're probably gonna get sued just for saying their fucking name on this thing. Those assholes are coming into Yeah. Leave it. Don't cut it. Okay. These guys are coming into it's free speech, yeah. I think we can talk about how much pricks the assholes at Bucky's is. They're suing the local. Don't go to Buckeys. They are coming into to towns all over the country and they are suing the shit out of these small business owners because they're they're they're suing Mickey Mart, which is a local uh. They're suing one in uh Beaver Creek, Ohio called Beaver's Minimart, because they have a I mean they're in the town of Beaver Creek, Ohio. They of course are gonna be a beaver something. What? By the way, there is a liquor store in uh Beaver Creek, Colorado called Beaver Liquors, just a side note. Beaver Liquor. And so they said the cartoon character creates customer confusion. Oh, come on. They they they sued a uh a dog rest stop in Marshfield, Missouri called Barkeys. What? They sued the owner, the owner ended up closing, have to having to have him to quit. Um pick pick on somebody you're all in size, guys. You want a bucky? So why don't you pick on loves or something?
SPEAKER_01So they're already getting some pushback because now apparently some people have been digging into the owner's history, and apparently he's a real creep.
SPEAKER_00Well, look, did you they they they showed his photo or an interview with him on uh John Oliver the other day? You can tell. I mean, I listen, I you can you can tell how people are and that guy is asleep. Kind of like Max Miller.
SPEAKER_01He's got those crazy sleazy, he's got those crazy eyes that you can tell. Yeah, the people the crazy people have sleeves.
SPEAKER_02Steve Miller. Stephen Miller. There's another one.
SPEAKER_00Well, he looks like a penis. Stephen Miller. Oh, yeah. Well, he's also he actually looks like a penis. Yeah, he's not a good guy. Yeah, he's like, Steven Goebbels. Goebbels. Just a light. So anyway, I say uh fuck Buckeys. Yeah, I don't want to cut off that fucking beaver anywhere. Cut him off. And we all like never mind. Cut him off. So anyway, screw Buckies.
SPEAKER_01I like that.
SPEAKER_00Uh, you got anything? Uh maybe a win or or a pour one out or cut them off? If I'm gonna be honest, I forgot about this segment. Um good. So you know I gotta pour them out. I gotta or I say I gotta pour them another. Which okay pour them another. What's your Thompson Dusky lately?
SPEAKER_01Oh, dude.
SPEAKER_00Of course, pour them another. I mean, man, the music scene, the the the the the stuff on Jackson Street Pier, um the farmer's market is killing it. I just granted I'm sucking up to my wife here a little bit. I just had a nice conversation.
SPEAKER_01It's just been it's been oh, I got another pour them out too. I I just had a nice conversation with uh Nick, you know, old style Nick. Yeah. I with his mom at at uh the coffee shop the uh yesterday, and she said the same thing. We we both agree. We both had a conversation about how well Sandusky's doing when it comes to events and just everything.
SPEAKER_00It's just drawing people down here and it's looking good. I agree. Uh you know, the weather's been good to it. And I would say I got another pour them another.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you're here, you're I geez.
SPEAKER_00I got some good vibes, and then you can see if you can think it. I'm trying to I'm trying to buy a little time for you to think of something, but if you're not, um we are uh over at Teaks, you know, I've been over there a lot, and uh it's rolling great. Um and I tell you what, the locals in Bayview are awesome. Yeah, they've been showing up, I'm getting all kinds of cool stories, uh they're having a good time. Speaking of Teaks, we are uh food truck there this Friday. Who you got? Archie's pizza and be there, and then we start some live music there on Sunday. Sunday afternoon live music there. Okay. Uh we got Macy Bing coming up from Nashville on a Sunday. And then of course, here we've got live music tonight. Uh tonight, which probably I don't know. This will be, I don't know if this will be up tonight, so you probably already heard it. Uh but Friday, we got um, you know who's back Friday? Uh Matt.
SPEAKER_01Zale?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Zal. Why'd I say Zale?
SPEAKER_00Zal? Yeah. Zale's a department store. It's his department store you buy. But he's back to Friday night. He's always a great one. He's really good. Um that's all I got. You got any you got any wins, fails? Any wins and fails? Any any uh pour them another or something cut them off?
SPEAKER_01I was thinking uh I wanted to come up with a winner, a fail for like bar stuff.
SPEAKER_00Um, we still have the thing that we gotta end with is what's your favorite bar tool? Oh, and then we have trivia too, of course. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, you know what? I had a good uh I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna do a what was it? You say pour another? Is that our thing? Pour another. Pour another. I'm gonna pour another for the BG and Toledo area breweries right now. Oh, yeah. Dude, you ready for it? I've been having some really good beers from Juniper. Juniper's always good. BG. Thanks, Dave. Uh what else you got? You've got um Schnitz. Oh, that's Parma. Schnitz Parma, huh? That's Parma. Yeah, but they think they're also good. Dude, Boozendorf. Um Ghost Tree. Ghost Tree. Ghost Tree. And uh the the the other one. Umcore. Encore. Yeah. Dude, uh lately their beers have been stellar. And I'm just and it's not Toledo, but we'll include Schnittz, too, because theirs have been awesome. Yeah, yeah. We've we've called them out before, but they uh Hellbenders, the uh distributor that we've been working with, it's more of a kind of a craft distributor. Yeah, a little bit of a they've been crushing it with their lineup, and it's pretty awesome. Able to get our hands on some local beers that you otherwise wouldn't if you were going with the big guys. So yeah. That's your pour them out.
SPEAKER_00That's why that should that pour them out for the other. Pour them another.
SPEAKER_01I gotta get it straight out. I'll pour one out for sixteen dollar modello at Cedar Point. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Cut them off. God, cut them off. Yeah, that's ridiculous. Uh okay. Trivia? Not yet. Not yet. Okay, you're trivia. We end with trivia typically, right?
SPEAKER_01Yes. Number one.
Best Bartending Tool And Trivia Wrap
SPEAKER_00Your most important tool in bartending.
SPEAKER_01Friendliness, dude. Friendliness.
SPEAKER_00I was because okay, very nice. Yes. I was thinking okay, but I was thinking a physical tool.
SPEAKER_01Oh, a physical tool?
SPEAKER_00Like your tool. Not your tool. I mean, that's important too.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I took it kind of like, oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome. You know, you need that. You wouldn't have a job anymore if you pulled out a tool. Yeah. That's don't, don't, you know. Don't. So no, I was thinking like when I was I was thinking like an actual tool. I mean, yes, friendliness without a doubt. Like caveman tool. Like, like, yeah, like, you know, locally, spiritually.
SPEAKER_01Like an actual tool. I oh boy. You know what? Metamorphically. You don't metaphorically. I'm going to say it's my my trusty old bar towel game.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, we're in agreement. We're in agreement? I didn't think you were going to say that. That was the bar towel is the most important thing. I would agree. And here's why I say that, dude. If I don't have my if I even if I'm behind the bar and the bar's not open, feel nickname. I'm reaching back there all the time. 100%. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01100%.
SPEAKER_00The bar tall.
SPEAKER_01And I'm not going to say in a close second because it's not even that close, but I will say I carry two things on with me. Well, at Putin Bay, I used to carry three. Here, I carry two. It is my bar towel and my beverage key. Your your church key? My church key.
SPEAKER_00I don't carry a church key. Those are the two. I like having it right in my back. Always a bar tall. Church key. I tend to not use the church key. I just tend to do it by hand. And I can check out. What about the ones that well then I use, I use the one. You know how we have one behind the bar? Yeah, I use that. Yeah. So there you go.
SPEAKER_01And when I worked out when I worked outside of Putnam Bay, I used to carry a lighter all the time too. Because you gotta people smoke all the time.
SPEAKER_00A lighter back in the old days. Yeah, in the old days.
SPEAKER_01But that's it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, bar top. Yeah, I uh light up a loose cigarette. Physical tool. Light up a loosey. A loose cigarette. A loose cigarette. Um yeah, okay. Well, I thought that was going to get more interesting because uh we wouldn't have the same thing. But yes, friendliness, obviously, and acknowledging. That's a whole nother conversation.
SPEAKER_01Let me let me let me go a little deeper on that one. You know what's something I don't I think you do the same thing, actually. I have a weird thing when I bartend, I I almost have to always wear a hat.
SPEAKER_00I you know, it's funny, I start my shifts once in a while without a hat, and by midshift I got a hat on.
SPEAKER_01I do it all the time. Yeah, I did it last Friday. Started without a hat without a without a hat and then ended up with a hat on. Yeah. I don't know. I feel like it gives you a little shield if you feel I don't know what it is. I don't know. Yeah. All right.
SPEAKER_02Did you ever hear that what a girl asked you once, uh, do you ever smoke after sex?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I never looked. That's right.
SPEAKER_02That's great, guys.
SPEAKER_00That's great. That's great, guys. Brought that one in there. That's great. All right. We got some trivia back here.
SPEAKER_02Well, VD is nothing to clap about. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00I bet you that joke's been told about all that.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I've told both those jokes plenty of times.
SPEAKER_02So, so is um what was the name of the Italian restaurant that was in the mall?
SPEAKER_00So, oh, oh, oh, oh. It's not Saparo. Why am I thinking about it? It's Saparo, but because there's a Scatos.
SPEAKER_02Scato's! Yeah, that's not the one I was talking about. This is more of a bigger restaurant, a sit-down restaurant. I did trivia there for a while. Down near Sears.
SPEAKER_01It's not Poopy Tuesdays.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_00What? I mean, we're going back. We're going back to that.
SPEAKER_02Maybe. No, you guys were. Scato's wasn't Italian restaurants. It's a pizza place, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Italian restaurant?
SPEAKER_02Angelo's. You remember that? Angelo's.
SPEAKER_00I got nothing.
SPEAKER_02Nothing. Don't remember Angelos.
SPEAKER_01I said it. You hear me? I said it like I knew what he was talking about. Angelos. No, I have no idea.
SPEAKER_00There's a bartending tool right there. Bullshit for six hours.
SPEAKER_02Oh, Angelo.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's great. Been there. Yeah, I remember that. Yeah, nice place.
SPEAKER_02What was the name of a fancy restaurant on 250? The Brown Derby. No, yeah. Remember the Brown Derby. No, it was about where Panera is now. And it had uh Fanny Bears? That's it. Well, that's where you used to DJ that DJ there for a while.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know that one. Fanny Bears. That's a great thing that's your that's the trivia for this time. That's it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's a great yeah. You could have done a little better there, I think. Oh, yeah, I think so. Oh, we didn't like that one.
SPEAKER_02Well, okay. That's it. That's nothing bad.
SPEAKER_00That's all I got today. All right. Okay. Well, yeah, well on that bombshell. On that bombshell, I guess probably. Peely. Peely.
SPEAKER_01Kelly's.
SPEAKER_00Is it Kelly's? Kelly's. Peely is bigger than Kelly's. Kelly's is the biggest island on the American side in Lake Erie. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_02See, that's you press me like that. Nice.
SPEAKER_00Oh, we blew out another light here. Timing-wise, look at this. The other light just popped out. Popped out.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I'll tell you, the producer can't ask trippy questions, right? The lights are going out. Oh man. You better shape up your body.
SPEAKER_01It seems like this entire show has run out of batteries. Yes. And on that bomb show, we're out of here.
SPEAKER_00I do want, we got it very good. We do have to talk about if the car thing's going to happen. Oh, the trip. The trip. I think we have to do it somehow.
SPEAKER_01We're going to sit on it and talk about it. Talk about it next week.
SPEAKER_00Buy the uh barpod meme coin and uh and we can just retire. Don't buy it. And just grift as many people as possible. Don't buy it. Hey, we're out of here. Play to see ya.
unknownRyan.
SPEAKER_03This is not the bottom. Let's go let's go.
